| Post subject: USB Security Device - Any local Bank NOT using? |
I opened an account at ICBC, but was dismayed that they use a USB security device for online banking that requires some pretty weighty software to be installed. I go to great lengths to keep my computer simple without such software.
I have a couple bank accounts in Hong Kong and they use a much preferred pocket secure one-time number generator that does not require my computer be burdened with software.
At this stage, I'd switch in a second to any local bank that offers online service WITHOUT the necessity of installing software I DO NOT WANT ON MY COMPUTER.
Thanks.

^ You're SOL.
The only Mainland bank that has a random number generator (e-Token) is Bank of China, but their online banking system still requires you to install a JAVA program. In addition, their online banking system is a complete joke and is anything but comprehensive. |

I use Pudong Development Bank. I didn't need to buy the USB. Every time I log in online, they email me a random code to my cell phone. I need that and my regular password to make transactions online. |

I have pudong development bank and they required me to get the USB. I declined to get it since I don't really do much banking here. |

Required? I think it's an option. |

They told me it was required for online banking, but I just opted out since I don't need much banking services here (mainly I was too lazy). It may have been some language-misunderstanding though as I didn't pursue it further. |

It might be related to the functions you need to use with online banking. Most banks require some type of USB device if you plan on making transfers to accounts other than your own with online banking. |

I use the ICBC usb thing, but it's anything but heavy...it just has a certificate on it + some simple software and works quite fine. Better than the BoC token that requires to scroll through unlogical log-in pages. |

Except the software is all in chinese. I'm with CMB.. and it took a PhD to decipher through the jargon to send money to Ctrip |

^ Yeah, CMB has a great online banking system, but unless you are fluent in China AND have a computer with a Chinese O/S you'll find yourself FITA.
For online banking in English, you can't beat ICBC. |

I have the ICBC USB thing, I installed it on my office computer this morning, and surprise! It says the password is invalid. Is it because between I subscribed to it and installing it, there is almost a month?
It's their fault. The thing won't work on my English version of Vista at home. |

It's because either you don't remember your password or it is asking for the 8-digit default password for first time installation that they told you about at the bank.
It works on my Vista. Must be your fault. |

I triple checked and used the default 8-digit password that was clearly handwritten by the bank employee. I installed it as Personal Banking option. Should the key be in when you log in? I left it in the USB port just in case.
Now says exceeded error attempts. I guess I'll just have to drop in at the branch tomorrow. |
