Try Sun Island and Binhai. If you don't mind playing on a 9 hole course, you can try the hong qiao course.

Thanks for the suggestions! Do you know the prices for 18 holes at Sun Island and Binhai? I tried looking at the websites of both and found some rates on the Binhai website at 760rmb for weekday visitor and 1560rmb for weekend visitor. Guest are 260rmb for weekday and 960rmb weekend. Members are free on Weekdays and different rates on weekends. Of course there is a facility fee of 220rmb and caddie of 100rmb. not sure if you are required to pay for both of those. On the home page it list a membership at 2880rmb, which would be worth it to play free on weekdays considering you could get your value back after only a few rounds. golf is even more expensive than I thought it was here. I just can't bring myself to drop a minimum of 760rmb + 220 + 100 = 1,080rmb for a round. I wouldn't (some would) pay that at most places in the USA unless it was a PGA site or something. Didn't see any rates for Sun Island on their website both English and Chinese. So any advice for a guy looking to find a round at around 500rmb or is that just out of the question?

Not too sure about the prices for those courses. The best thing to do is to call up the courses you're interested in and ask about their green fees and member policy. I've learned that you can't really compare the prices for golf between most places in the US and Shanghai, or you would probably just end up not playing at all.

All golf in China that I know of has a green fee, facility fee and caddie fee. There is no way around this as caddies are a requirement -- it puts people to work. Most decent course in Shanghai cost anywhere from 75-200 US$$ per round, depending if you play on weekend or weekday. I don't think any of the memberships are worth it. For example, the "free weekdays" at Binai are not free with membership...they waive the green fee. You still have to pay facility fee and caddie fee, which will set you back 50 US$$. If you want to play golf in China, realize that it is costly and don't think about it -- just take the plunge and play. Remember, it may be expensive for westerners, but for the Koreans and Japanese who play, it is cheap compared to their home countries-- they drive up the price.

I agree. Actually, many things (besides golf) are more expensive than most parts of the US (e.g. cars, homes, etc.). It'll only drive you nuts to compare - I used to do that.

If you look at joining a golf club in China (or Asia) strictly from a cost perspective, it will certainly not work out in your favor unless you're able to consistently hit the links several times a week. From that sense, it is probably not worth it. However, if you want to play, then you unfortunately just need to fork out whatever you're willing/able to pay. Certainly don't need to join a golf club to play but there are obviously limitations as to when and with whom you can play.

Ditto -- I'd also like to find a semi-private place to play within an hour or so's drive, where a round with cart will run less than 700rmb -- do these exist?

Just find someone who is a member at a golf club and play with them. I think most clubs have have a slightly lower rate for the members' guests.

Count on paying between 1000 to 1300 RMB per round, if you are not a member. A bit steep for the quality of the courses but cheaper than in Korea and Japan.....
