| Post subject: Bad Luck or some truth to this......... |
For the third time in the last 10 years I have been deceived/cheated/taken unfair advantage of by my bosses in China. The only one thing of similarity that has been pointed out to me by my Chinese friends is that in every one of these cases my bosses have all been Taiwanese.
Now I find that everytime I speak to my friends (Chinese and foreigners) they are telling me that I should never work for these people, they are all the same. Is this true? I did a search on the Net and it seems that they don't have a very good reputation as bosses. Has anyone else had problems like this?
I certainly don't want to believe this but now I am wondering if this is a case of bad luck or if there is really something to this......... |

Yeah, a lot of Chinese people I know tend to have very little good to say about the Taiwanese either. Strange that they're all so keen to be reunited with them really...
Having said that, all the Taiwanese people I've met have seemed pretty cool, so maybe you were just unlucky. I guess anyone in a position of power is perhaps more likely to let their unpleasant side come out, regardless of where they're from. |

Taiwanese bosses are famous for their work ethic and entrepreneurial skills. Sadly, they are infamous for their lack of integrity. Based on several years of working in Taiwan I'd say Taiwanese bosses are "craftier" (for lack of a better word) than most, especially when operating in China, where they are on the defensive, untrusting of most everbody but their own and targeted regularly for shakedowns. That being said, each of my four bosses was straight with me in all respects. |

Like any generalization, some facts and cases do support this. many Taiwanese businesses are run like family run Chinese companies where the companies outgrow the owner's ability to manage or even understand the business. Some allegedly savvy entrepreneurs wil expand therr businesses into unknown areas and try to maintain come sort of control to pretend they understand the business where in fact they were way out of their league. Have seen many companies suffer this fate; have worked for a few of these bosses too. I have known quite a few hardcore Taiwanese business folks that really understood business. but really, those folks were in their niche and they really knew their business and industry; not like a successful restauranteur assuming they could sell home furnishings or something silly like that, you know?
My take is that its not just bad luck in your case; you probably also did not see all the facts before diving in. We tend to do that, those of us who trust other people.
Just keep your eyes open next time around. In the meantime, good luck with your negotiations. |

that's bs, a-holes are everywhere, in any nationality. bad luck? if you believe so, but like what yu is saying, perhaps you just made some (three in fact) bad choices.
moreover, aside from a taiwanese boss, the other common denominator is you. no offense, but have you checked the person on the mirror?

Crafty doesn't mean not nice.
Also, what underh20 said. |

I think you'd make a mistake to avoid working with Taiwanese people in the future. My boss is Taiwanese (I work in Taiwan), and she's the best boss of the 20+ I've had in my life. Of course there are terrible Taiwanese bosses, but in my opinion adhering to this kind of stereotype could get you stuck with a terrible, deceptive, "crafty" Chinese boss. People are individuals and deserve to be treated as such - for your own good as well as theirs. |

So is the hate vote between Taiwanese vs. Chinese ? Or Taiwanese vs. Other People ? Or Naive vs. Shrewd ? I'm confused. |

Not really slimey--I find the Shanghaiese to be much slimier (hua tou) than the Taiwanese--but, rather, exceptionlly good a playing the angles. |

Hi Jolynne, sorry to hear of your bad luck. Do hope these experiences don't turn you against Taiwanese in general. Have worked with and for people from a variety of nationalities. Always find it's better to think of each person as an individual, rather than to classify a whole group as bad because of a few experiences. Have usually enjoyed working with Taiwanese colleagues.
Do hope your next job experience is good. |

Hi Boronia,
No worries I am not totally against the Taiwanese.....I believe that in the future as Yu said I will just have to learn to not be so naive and trusting. Thanks for your wishes...... |

hi there,
Sometimes is just very hard to understand how to work with others but somehow as it has already been said it has nothing to do with nationalities but just people's education/culture/way of dealing with others and or managing their staff....
I do truly believe that there is no bad staff but pretty bad managers...
Take care and just do not take it personnally !
Cheer up and take care

Good post by Yu8. My experiences dealing with thoses bosses - never as their employee though - tells me to avoid Honkongese/Singaporean/ Taiwanese/Chinese/acronym bosses, in that order. |

Anyway its a cultural thing. Think Confucius and Deng Xiaoping of "grab all the money you can, step on other peopl's head, is good" fame. |
