Last week a taxi stopped for me when I put my arm out, despite 2 Chinese (who hadn't been waiting) trying to jump in front of me and nab it when it slowed. The driver wouldn't take them. Guess it was the pregnant belly - should have used the old cushion up the jumper routine earlier... !

You're welcome but let me add my own....

When I started the thread I had actually meant to start something altogether different. I was hoping people would share their undiscovered Shanghai gems (hole in the wall restaurants, beautiful little known streets, etc.) So, you really have coffeehawk to thank for the unexpected pleasure of this thread.

Yes - the thread has become more on "Unexpected Kindness" than your original idea of "Unexpected Pleasures". Anyway, many refreshing stories, though.

On Sunday ...... took some pants that had ripped around the back pocket to be repaired to my downstairs, laundry/haberdashery.

The guy did them as I waited and a very nice job too, took him 5 to 10 minutes to thread the machine and execute the repair.

He refused to take any money for it, a freeby, and I'm not exactly a regular customer.

The shop next door to above, a small convenience store. Bought a bottle of wine for about 42 rmb, gave a 50 note, they had no change so started rushing around trying to find some. I was in a hurry so just left "Mei wenti, wo bu yao", and I left.

When I went back into that shop a week later, they produced a plastic bag from under the counter with my 8 rmb change. Nice.

Unexpected pleasure I experienced that one day I was on my way to threater alone. And I was asking the heading direction of that location to a lady then a guy who in a cab was continue sending greetings to me when he stopped on the road. Feel a little bit surprised and flattered.

My PDA was falling apart which made it constantly soft boot and lose all of its backup battery power as the special screws that hold it together had fallen out over time. I went to several repair booths on HuaiHai Lu and no one had these special screws.

I was now looking for a new PDA (this one owes me nothing after 4 years) as it looked like this one was done for. After 6 or 7 booths I finally found a guy who said that his tech could fix anything but was out eating lunch and to wait a moment. The guy went to bring his tech back from lunch and sure enough after going through several boxes of little parts for 10 to 15 minutes found the 2 screws I needed, put them in and voila the PDA once again worked perfectly.

I was so relieved that I never even asked how much this would cost. When time came to pay he just waved his hand and said 免费的 (free charge).

It is sometimes amazing how much a little randon act of kindness can mean to someone, especially in China.

I was wandering through the neighborhoods near the Nan Pu Bridge today and decided to try to find the Fabric market. I asked directions from an older couple out for a walk and they walked me the five blocks to get there. Very sweet.

I was at Kerry Centre and a taxi with a foreigner passenger stopped. The foreigner had a crutch and a bandaged up leg. The Kerry Centre security who often is rather rude in directing cars off the circular driveway, opened the taxi door for the foreigner, help him with his crutches while his colleague ran over to the building door to open it for the foreigner. Thought it was very nice of the security guys especially since they are known to be not friendly with people. But not even a nod of thank you from the foreigner!

My recent experience was shared with a taxi driver ( who has not ),I had got into hongqiao airport at 1am had to go to ramada pudong for a 6 am flight same day.
He had worked his normal 12 hours then some, lost 90% of his teeth in a struggle with old age, cigarettes and broken hearts I Think. His spectiles were held together by good fortune and gravity. He spoke some english.
It was raining badly and windscreen steamed up,he spoke I wiped the windscreen continuously ( on his side ) and his humour made me break my pattern of thought about HOW I HATE flying in China.I wish him and his family well and all who ride with him.
I suggest his hard work is helping pay the bills, his humour and warm laughter is helping the world feel warmer in our hearts.

ok another from page 85 of " unexpected pleasures" :
The Old lady on the subway no.2 line who got up on the crowded train, tugged at my shirt and pointed for me to sit down.I kindly refused, and some lcoal jumped at the chance.
Funny thing was the lady didn't get off for 5 more stops.
I felt like hassling the guy out,but it is a foreign land.Yet I know how to say "Crazy" in Mandarin loudly !

Now for item 10 on page 57 from " expect this to happen" ;
kidding!

I consider the time reading this entire thread well-spent.

I've had such experiences, too, not only in Shanghai, but in other cities as well.

When I first came to China, I had no idea of how things are done here. I didn't know when is the best time to go shopping. One Saturday morning, I went to Carrefour. I thought going there at mid day was a good idea to avoid rush hour. It turned out the other way around. When I finished shopping, I went to get a cab, but there was none, and when one came, some locals rushed to take it. I couldn't do as they did because I had many bags. After about an hour, I felt defeated and all. I couldn't speak Chinese, and I had no one to help me with my bags while I try and get a cab.

I gathered all courage and strength left of me; I went inside a bakeshop and asked if there's anyone who can help me get a taxi. Nobody understood me (or maybe there were some students who understood, but didn't care much). I went back out. There was a girl giving out flyers, and she offered me one. I refused having no free hand to get it. I doubted if she can speak English, but still I tried. To my surprise, she can speak English well enough.

I asked her if she can help me get a taxi, and she asked me where I wanted to go. I showed her the "Chinese address cheat", and she said, "Okay, please wait here." That I did, and she went off to the road. After about five minutes, I got a taxi that I'm sure I wouldn't have had if not for that young girl's help.

I felt so much relief that my tiredness seemed to have disappeared.

I wrote about this on my blog and titled it, "Good Things Happen when You Need Them". They certainly do, and sometimes when you least expect them.
