Ok, I just came back from 十六铺 (shi liu pu), another fabric market, today. Don't know what the English name is, but it's not far from the Bund. I went with a great tailor who does not work at the market but has made a great suit for my coworker. Although he has many foreigner clients, unfortunately he does not speak English, so this would be helpful only for you guys that speak decent Mandarin.
If you do speak Mandarin, then I definitely recommend him. I found out about him through my gf, who has used his services for years. She studied fashion design in college so is pretty picky. In short, he can help you pick out the fabric and bargain for you with the vendors (although I've noticed that the prices here are usually very reasonable and usually non-negotiable, which I actually prefer), then he'll take care of the rest. It takes him about 10 days to make a suit. Your cost would depend on the fabric that you pick, but usually it comes to between 600 to 700 RMB, including all material and labor.
Today, I went to the market with him, my gf, my coworker and his gf. I bought enough fabric for 2 suits (one of them quite shiny  , a blazer, a long-sleeved dress shirt, a short-sleeved dress shirt and a cashmere coat with faux fur lining. I think I spent about 2000RMB on the material. The labor would probably be another 1200RMB. I think the prices are definitely a steal and I've seen the suit that this tailor made for my coworker, so I trust his craftsmanship. Of course, you are not going to get Armani-quality stuff, but the value is outstanding. I think he's a very nice and honest guy, would love to introduce to him more business.

It was decent. the cotton in the shirts were too stiff to be comfortable at 38c temperatures. The suit was cut real sharp.. very flattering. Will head back to have her do my cashmere winter jackets. |

I used Dave's in the Concession (NOT Shanghai Centre) for 3 shirts. I chose high thread count cotton - good quality but quite stiff so I echo the comments that it is a bit heavy for hot summer weather. The buttons are plastic - not mother of pearl. Quality of construction fine. I had to have them redone as the sleeves were too long and arms very tight - they fixed them (but interesting - the people doing the work live in another city and it had to be flown in/out). The cost was over 400 rmb per shirt... and suits are at least 4800 rmb.... not sure I see value but no question they have good selection |

If you're talking about the street market behind Jiu Guang, its already closed as of 28 May 2008. Any other suggestions on where to go for watches? Am freaked about going to one of those touristy S&T or nanjing Xi Lu markets |
Just went to S&T for the first time and it is tiny. Where are the other places? |

S&T is pretty large IMO, did you walk around both sides of the subway station?
I think QiPu Lu is large but I can't understand why anybody would wnat to go to that hell hole. Every store sells almost identical merchandise though, so I don't see why you'd need more than 3 stores anyways |

S&T, yes, but at QiPu there is actually more of a selection...
However, all of the stuff you find in these markets are going to be pretty poor. Rarely will you find any of the high grade stuff. |

Did a little shopping for some friends back home and here are the prices that i received.
mens & ladies walets-20 rmb
mens belts - 20 rmb
Sports Jerseys - 100-120 rmb
pearl necklace low quality - 10 - 20 rmb for small ones
ladies shoes - 30 rmb
men's Ties - 7.5 rmb
designer sunglasses - 13 rmb
Ladies Gucci & Prada bags medium size - 75 rmb
mens assorted bags (addidas, puma, etc) - 40 rmb
I recommend the hong mei lu market, you don't get attacked as much and its clean and just a nice place to visit. Of course I spent a lot of time bargaining these prices and bought most of them in multiples of 5 so that will always affect the price, my suggestion is when they ask how many you want to start bargaining with 1 unit, then once you have a reasonable price you can cut it down a little more by purchasing multiples |

Hong Mei Road in one block away from Gubei Carrefour. You can tell the taxi to take you to Hong Mei Lu, Yan'an Lu. There are also some decent restaurants there. |

just went to hongmei lu yesterday and here are the prices i got
-4 Rolex for 500rmb
-1 big low quality cheap pearl necklace & 1 medium shell pearl necklace for 50rmb
-1 small burberry shoulder bag from back for 120rmb
-1 northface backpack for 90rmb
-2 northface jackets & a big pony polo for 580rmb
not the best prices but didn't try to hard (once didn't even haggle) and it was a Sunday |

You can find faked products of good &bad quality in Hongmei Lu, Qi Pu Lu is more of a place for local ppl while Hong Mei lu is more for foreigner, it's kinda another xiangyang lu.

I've purchased a significant amount of suits, tuxedos and womens clothing for myself and menbers of my family from the following shops that I would highly recommend:
Suits - 242
Shirts - 329
Womens Cloths - 336
Their prices were less than those you quoted, and although there were a few minor alterations required, they were completed quickly and cheerfully.
If you should choose to visit them, say that a tall "Older" American named Roger recommended that you stop to see them. Perhaps they will offer you prices similar to the ones I received.
