Post subject: Local Chinese Bars

There may already be a thread about this, but I can't find it! Does anyone have any good local Chinese bar recommendations? I'm looking for a place foreigners don't really hang out. Preferably around the Xujiahui area, but that's not too important.

I have a few Chinese friends who totally get intimidated by foreigners in mass.

Maybe ask the Chinese friends? As they should know better about Chinese bars than expats on shanghaiexpat Smile

It would seem to me that you and your Chinese friends might make a night of it looking for a good local spot. Nice way to kill an evening.

The are a couple on Hua Shan Lu near Zhenning Lu. I have heard stories mostly of foreigners going into these place and if they can speak chinese, its not much of issue. There are a handful that just don't like obvious foreigners and another handful that cater to Japanese.

That's a new one.

Imagining what that phobia would be like for foreigners that come here.... talk about paranoia, wow.

As to your question, why don't you try Richy in Fuxing Park.

I also heard Bon Bon was awesome for locals.........

Obviously, there is no pub/bar culture in China. Try restaurants. People drinks along with food here. Smile

Try GQ-club. It's just around the corner of Babyface. 99.9% locals. I am not recommending, but it is what you are asking for.

Despite what some folks withoutmuch clue may think, there are many small coffee bars and local bars and such around town but it does take some searching for a place one would like, many are jst small litle dives, perfect for a few cheap drinks, but keep in mind most drinkng locally is either done with food, or in other not so bar-like settings. Unclear about in XJH area though sorry.

There's also Monkey Bar on the Xujiahui end of Hongqiao Rd, on the 2nd floor, I think. For the address, see 'That's Shanghai.' It's a very local bar.

I've never been to these places. maybe not open enough,maybe cannot dance(I haven't learned it before),maybe don't like the noisy spot,maybe there are so many bad things in these places through Media.most of Chinese have the same reason like mine.

Hengshan Lu. Most foreigners have the good sense and better taste to steer clear of that strip. If a smokey bar with bad neon and lots of people sitting around throwing dice and sucking on green tea and whiskey is your friends' thing, then you can't go wrong.

'Local" = only chinese
or "local" = really chinese culture
