| Post subject: Somebody needs to explain this to me . . . |
The Pict and I were invited to brunch on Sunday by an American friend living in Singapore whose parents are visiting from the U.S. Said friend is married with three young children. When we met everyone, it was apparent that there was a lot of tension. I was seated next to our friend’s mother, who told me that they had just arrived the day before and were informed 1) they would be staying in a hotel, and 2) visiting hours to the home were restricted to between 4:00 and 6:00 pm.
WTF?
Mind you, this family has two live-in maids in a large, single family house and the mother doesn’t work outside the home! The dad recently took early retirement and is therefore at home, too, although busy with an intense mandarin language course.
Reminds me of another couple we know who live in Hong Kong. The husband is American and they have two children. Since the kids were born, they have consistently had two full-time maids, but the mother is completely overwhelmed. She doesn’t work outside the home, but is unable to cope with the tiniest interruptions, including visitors, etc. She complains constantly about how much she has to do . . . yet her maids do all the cleaning, cooking, laundry, ironing, etc.
I cannot imagine how these women would cope in the West, especially in the U.S., where young mothers most often work outside the home with no domestic help whatsoever and dubious childcare.
Maybe I’m just getting old, but I don’t understand this uppity attitude, especially from women who grew up in “deprived” backgrounds who should be used to roughing it a bit.
