| Post subject: moving in with dog - who has to agree? |
Hi there,
We have been living in Shanghai for the last 10 months.
Now it is time to move into a new apartment.
We have a little Yorkie and I wanted to find out if we have to ask
for permission from the administration of the complex or only from
the owner.
We lived in a pet-friendly compound so far and I didn't waste a
second thought on this question.
HOwever I have been over to the new place several times and never
seen any dogs and now am quite worried.
Can anyone help me out?
many thanks! |

I have only needed permission from the Landlord...however it would be foolish not to check with the Compound management as some have rules on where you are allowed to excercise the dogs, when you can excercise them etc etc.therefore you may not find it suitable. I have been lucky to live in 2 compounds that are very animal friendly...only need to keep them on leads...eventhough the Chinese owners seem to ignore this rule. |

you may also need permission from several of your neighbors in order to get your dog licnesed at any particualr residence.
As posted by another regular on the forum:

You need to go to the local police station - the one in your area designated for this.
You need:
1. picture of you
2. picture of the dog - front and side view [length]
3. copy of your passport and current visa
3. vaccination records
4. letter from landlord and / or signatures from neighbors [maybe half-a-dozen] - to agree you will have a dog
5. dog licensing fee - Pudong: 1000 RMB, Puxi: 2000 RMB [fees go up if you live inside the ring]
6. copy of your lease
And anything else that local police branch needs for 'verification' of your animal... |
You may als0 need your Residence Permit since it obviously makes no sense to be owning a pet if you are on a tourist visa eh? Seems this isnt always enforced but just be advised. The temp residence application form may be enough. |

as the police came to our compound to register and renew dog licenses, we just needed dog pic, my pic, passport with my visa, and money.
no vaccinations records, no letter from anyone, no lease copy, nothing from the landlord.
but as we know, it changes all the time! |

Hello Everyone,
Thanks a lot for all your input!
Yu888, thanks for the research and information provided.
My little dog is duly registered and we are on temp. residence permits (based on work permits).
Thanks again |

The lists that Yu888 mentioned above is usually the standard things that are needed when registering a dog with the local police in your area.
Whenever me move to a new apartment we always ask not only our Landlord if its OK we have dogs but also the Management. Just as long as you have your log on a leash and have respect expecially to the elders/young kids (meaning don't let your dog run loose..give way to them as it only takes 1 complaint to start a problem!).....
When my wife and I was living in Xujiahui, the Management was fine that we had dogs but we could not excercise them in the compound...so we had to walk them outside the complex.
Alifa....if you need a contact for registering your dog, let me know as we are good friends with a Vet Doctor who works with the Government (he does the microchipping & rabies shots).....I heard that the licencing period for dogs run from April to April....unsure.... |
