| Post subject: How far is too far? Commuting in Shanghai. |
My new office is in the Chemical Industry Park. Have never had to venture out of Pudong other than for nightly errmm missions.
Going crazy looking for apartments but totally clueless as to which place would be best suited to my needs.
Company bus picks up at 7.30 a.m. from XinZhuang Metro. Its almost an hours ride by bus. So how further should the home be to make it atleast bearable.
People working in the Chemical Industry Park, guys what do you do?
Any expats in the Jinshan or Caoshing (or something) area?
Kindly help. |

So you might need to find a place in Gubei or Minhang district. |

It's all a matter of time and money.
If you can afford your own car+driver, then you can use the travel time for reading or other interesting things.
Also, after a while, your driver will know the fastest way home and
how and where to avoid the traffic jams
As said, it's all a matter of time and money |

Depends what you want to do after work really.
I do the same road as you every day fron People's Square - good day 1 hour, bad day 2 hours. If you are working for the company I think then they have around 50 buses going all over town - even deepest darkest Pudong.
Been doing this for years - no worse than a London commute I reckon. |

Shanghai Chemical Industry Park from People's Square??? Everyday??? You sure got more balls than i do lady
True they have lots of buses going round Shanghai. But thats where i am concerned. 10-20 mins by metro or cabbing down to XinZhuang metro and then 50-60 mins to office or directly the company bus from the city ~1.5 hrs. Either way its wayyyy too long.
Any given day i go to bed around 1-2 a.m. 1.5 hr for commuting means should be out of my place by 7 a.m. Means getting up at around 6. 4-5 hrs of snooze time being regular occurence??? <shudder>
London? Please let it slide. Please. *going back in time...........
a 160cm 90 lb HUGE frame shoved around in the tube aaaaaaaaaaaa* jolt.
I love the metro here. Can participate whole heartedly in the pushing shoving arts and sciences |

husband will face more or less the same problem...
we live in JinQiao and he will go to SongJiang for working.
we chose to stay in Pudong, first because our son goes to Concordia, second because he will be travelling out China most of time.
but I'm not sure how he will handle this.
if is too hard for him, next year we will move to Gubei/Hongqiao |

If you are going to bed at 1-2am every night I assume you have a healthy social life so moving too far out might be too isolated for you, although I hear they have a "Baby Bamboo" in Nanqiao.......
Get on the bus in town......learn the art of instant sleep which everyone around practices.....that way you make up the lost sleep whilst travelling. |
