| Post subject: Flights from Shanghai to Hong Kong |
Hi,
I'm due to be in Shanghai in October but would like to visit family in Hong Kong during my stint in Shanghai.
What is the best and cheapest way to find return flights from Shanghai and Hong Kong? Is it better to wait until I get to Shanghai and try to find travel agents or can you book fairly decent priced tickets online?
Thanks! |

wait until you're here and sort it out then.
use China Eastern or Shanghai Airlines , they are normally a bit cheaper than DragonAir/Cathay and with less flights a day, your chances of a cancellation / massive delay are less |

look into flying to Shenzhen, then taking the ferry or train to HK. It could be a lot cheaper, and coming into Victoria Harbor on a boat is pretty cool. |

Shanghai Air yes, but Fiddler ! Look in the dictionary under "delay" or "cancelled" and there's a full-color portrait of a China Eastern jet ! They must have the worst record in China for reliability.
Okay on the Shenzhen idea but the ferry costs 150 rmb which does eat up some of the savings. Scenic way to go tho. |

Before planning any flights make sure you have a multiple entry visa into china, otherwise if you have a single entry you can forget about coming back in.................unless you get a visa in HK...........maybe in october things will have changed, since the olympics are well over by then...... |

And another thing, chine eastern is cheaper but the early morning flights get cancelled quite often so you end up waiting for the next flight for another 2 hours, the other thing is they don't cancel the flight, they get you onto the plane and then make you wait for 2 hours due to air traffic..............so, if you're going for leisure then fly china eastern, if for business choose Dragon............. |

I've gotten some good deals on Dragon Air to HK recently. Roughly 2600RMB for a return ticket and I'd fly them any time over China Eastern |

I prefer Dragon Air and not flewn any other airline to Hong Kong for the last two years. But I've also only had 1 flight ( maximum ) this year that wasn't delayed for at least one hour on at least one leg...No wonder with them now flying 16 times or more daily... |

Well the HK to SH route is very busy.............maybe they should consider putting some flights from hong qiao airport, then at least we don't have to trek all the way to pudong to fly 2 hours to HK. 1 hour (if you're lucky) to pudong and 2 hours to HK, crazy stuff..........whereas to hong qiao airport it's really comfy.............I really don't understand why they don't consider this, I mean hong qiao has flights to Korea and Japan..............strange stuff |

Thanks for the feedback people! Given that I'll be going to HK for weekends (Fri to Sun) I think I'm going to go for the more reliable Dragon service.
In terms of actually booking the tickets itself - where's the best place to go: physically at a travel agents or via the internet?
I've actually got a Home Visit Permit (Wo Heung Jing) so whenever I have travelled to China, I've not needed a visa. As I'm heading over to Shanghai for work (3 months initially), I'm wondering whether I need another visa to allow me to do so. Any ideas? |

If only I'd known about this earlier. Wait!-I did, just forgot.
What I wish to say, must be a world first. My wife rings me today, to inform me that China Eastern has informed her that 8AM flight to HK has been delayed by 1 hour. Meaning, I can now sleep a bit longer tomorrow, and arrive a bit later at Pudong.
But-fancy that! CE actually rings to inform passengers of a delay, 14 hours beforehand.
Must be a world first! Is this progress, or have I spoken too fast...? |

You can go to Shenzhen and back for 1,400 rmb. take the bus to Lo Wu station and then take the train to Kowloon or HK. Easy and cheap, you save about 1,600 to 2,000 rmb for the round trip, if you are 2 people double, lots of money. |

Is this a reply to the Original Poster's or mine?
If to the OP's, then he was looking for flights SH-HK. I was relating to the OP's general enquiry & other posters' feelings about China Eastern flights SH-HK.
I have known of the SZ-HK route for years, and have done it many times. This time I didn't want to spend the time, and the aggravation.
SH-HK-SH round trip of RMB2100 with CE. This airline has the poorest of breakfasts-almost inedible. But, this time, I am going to do the round trip, and a first time on this route with this carrier. I have no great expect-ations.
But, it rang a day earlier to inform of a delay. Imagine that - the Chinese management have got the message that there's a thing called 'the customer', and that good service to that customer is important, and what keeps them using your service. My, my, my, wonders never cease... |
