| Post subject: Bringing a cat to China from UK / Europe |
Hi,
I am trying to arrange for my cat to be transported to Shanghai from the UK.
Given the fact that all our other belongings we shipped 3 months agp are still stuck in Customs due to clamped down rules as a result of the Olympics, I'm a little nervous about the same sort of thing happening with kitty!
Has anyone else moved their pet in the last few weeks? I'd also be keen to hear from anyone who has brought their cat over from Europe / UK, especially recently, to hear their experiences of the process. We would be using a pet transport company, but have also heard of flying with Air France / Lufthansa and bringing her in the cabin with me.
Any advice / experience sharing much appreciated!! |

I have just brought my cat over from London and the paperwork was devilish. I highly recommend using a pet relocation company to ensure a (relatively) smooth passage through customs. I used Worldcare Pet Transport and was very happy with their service - expensive but worth every penny. PM me and I can send you their contact details.
Beware if coming directly from the UK. DEFRA absolutely refused to deliver the international health certificate (export certificate) necessary for Chinese customs - some lame excuse about the Chinese not having told them what was required on the form (basically that the cat is healthy)... so I had the health certificate done in France by a vet and then stamped by the French authorities (DDSV). I highly recommend you call DEFRA in advance about this certificate!
Otherwise I assume the cat has his EU Passeport, and that all rabies vaccinations and serotological certificate up to date? You can bring your cat to China on a simple rabies certificate but won't be allowed to bring him back to Europe without a valid Passeport and up to date vaccinations. I am not sure if the UK allows pets back directly from China, even with an EU Passeport - check with DEFRA before leaving. Make sure the passeport is kept up to date in China as well.
Finally, I flew with Lufthansa from Frankfurt with the cat in the cabin - Max 8 kilos (Air France is max 5 kilos) - was ok except for 10.5 hours of non-stop cat complaints... sigh.
Lots of info here: http://www.scaashanghai.org/china_pet_import_procedure.shtml
Finally, careful not to let your cat out in Shanghai. I've heard that pets have a way of disappearing here...
Was a pain to get Anakin here but I wouldn't do anything differently
Hope all this helps. |

I used to following agency (a year and a half ago) to bring my cat to Shanghai. Can HIGHLY recommend them. Made everything much easier as they meet you at the airport and walk you through everything. They do this all of the time and would know if there were any problems recently with the Olympics.

Not too easy on the pocketbook though as it is expensive, but in my opinion worth it.
The folloowing is what you need before you leave home:
Copy of official health certificate (dated less than 14 days of arrival)
2, Copy of Rabies certificate/record
3, Copy of your passport with clear picture
4, Your address and phone in Shanghai
5, Flight details
If you write to Jenny she will send you a copy of the health certificate with all of the information that needs to be on it. I did this in Spain and my normal vet did it for me (no translation was needed at that time).
Flew over with KLM and had my cat in the cabin with me. There is a 5 or 6 kg limit on weight (including the cage). We got pretty lucky when we checked in and the guy at the counter was really nice. He hooked us up with seats that had no one in front but was not emergency exit so the cage was on the floor in front of us all the time. Depending on the plane you could ask for similar seats. When you book the tickets MAKE SURE that you reserve for the cat as they only allow one animal per cabin and it must have a reservation. KLM charges you per kg as if it was overweight baggage.
Hope this helps and if you have any other questions please pm me. |
