gapyearkid,

You are not alone. I cannot access iTunes either. After a quick search yesterday there are a few people in Beijing with a problem too. I will let you know if I hear anything or when I can get back in.

There was an album for sale in Itunes that dealt with a certain disputed area near the Himalayas. I do not think a certain government was too pleased....thus Itunes has been blocked..at least for some.

Not only can I not access the iTunes store, but I can't even download ipod movie trailers from Apple's website anymore either. Whenever I click on the "For your Ipod" link, it just takes me to a blank page. Anyone else with that problem?

Post subject: iTunes Blocked in China

On the same day that iTunes became blocked in China a story made headlines across the US and the world about how 40 Olympic athletes downloaded the popular "Songs for t¡bet" album from Beijing in a show of solidarity with t¡betans in t¡bet.

It is no secrete that the Chinese government censors content dealing with t¡betan independence in China and t¡bet.

I feel terribly about this and I hope the Chinese government restores iTunes as soon as possible. To all the Chinese reading this, we are with you.

I have been unable to download most of my preferred podcasts for some time now. Anyone knows how to unblock the feeds?

I can't access the itunes store, but I am still able to download SOME of the podcasts I have subscribed to. Some seem very arbitrarily blocked, really annoying. Though there are very random times where I actually can get to things previously blocked; this only lasts for an hour or so.

I really don't think we can blame athletes for ruining everything because they downloaded music that they liked. The Chinese Government is at fault for blocking things that challenge their rule.

I hope the gov backs down soon....

Apple's iTunes music store has been blocked in China, allegedly due to some athletes listening to prοtest songs.

It started with Songs for t¡bet, a compilation produced by the Art of Peace Foundation, a US-based t¡betan activist group. The Foundation invited Olympic athletes to download the album free of charge. By listening in Beijing, the activist group said, athletes would communicate that "compassion and non-violence can overcome intolerance and oppression - beautiful ideals to be associated with the Olympic spirit".

More than 40 athletes downloaded the album, according to a press release, which includes songs by Sting, Rush, Damien Rice, Underworld and Alanis Morissette.

And then China turned off the iTunes music store.

Beginning on Monday, iTunes users in China found that the software wasn't working. Whereas they were previously able to download songs from the US-based online store, attempts now resulted in errors. Support forums filled with complaints, with reports that Apple had washed its hands of responsibility – saying that the store was being blocked by Chinese internet providers and the so-called "Great Firewall of China".

On china.org.cn, an internet portal managed by the Chinese government's Information Office of the State Council, an article reported that "angry netizens" were "rallying together to denounce Apple in offering Songs for t¡bet for purchase". Some of these "netizens", the article said, wished to ban any of the album's performers from entering China.

"The predictably hostile response to the album from Chinese internet users, as reported by an official Chinese media outlet, reflects continued attempts to suppress any support for t¡bet at a time of crisis for the t¡betan people, as well as the level of entrenched misinformation about t¡bet propagated by the Beijing government among the Chinese public," said Kate Saunders of the International Campaign for t¡bet, speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald.

This all comes at an awkward time for Apple, which has just opened its first Chinese bricks-and-mortar store. Apple CEO Steve Jobs - who is a practising Buddhist - is also negotiating with Chinese mobile phone operators over the iPhone.

With some Chinese citizens allegedly calling for an Apple boycott, the company will have to tread lightly – balancing its business in China with its relatively progressive reputation in the rest of the world.

And if more athletes in Beijing want to listen to Sting's Send Your Love (Art of Peace remix), for activist reasons or not, they will have to rely on plain old music piracy.

So does this mean that we won't be able to get Podcasts updates? This can't be true, I hope it is temporarily...
