| Post subject: Safety and privcy online! |
Hi there
I’m quiet new over here. China is a wonderful country, I love the landscapes & Chinese babies are so cute ! But there are many fake brands products. And I think buying for instance a Guess handbag here is too expensive ! So I’d like to order some products on the Web, but I have doubt about the security online. Do you guys think it’s a good thing to buy online from China? Your advices will be very helpful! Xiexie . |

Buying online is as safe here as anywhere else as long as a) you know what you are buying and b) you use a credit card. |

Hehe you're a nice joker! The point is that I've heard many bad things about the Internet in China. However some of my new Chinese friends told me that buying online is not as bad as I would have thought. Indeed contrary to what I used to do in France, it seems that we can pay once we have been delivered! It's amazing, don't you think so? If it's really the case, then of course I will not hesitate to order online! Does anybody have the same information as me? |

^ Haven't you ever heard of the term chargeback?
If you use your credit card and the transaction gets screwed up, you initiate the chargeback process and your bank will get your money back for you. It really isn't rocket science. Any primary school kid in the States knows this. |

Post your credit card number here and we'll check whether your card is safe to use in China or not. |

I know a lot of chinese buy from taobao. This is one of the largest online shopping operations in the country ( like ebay). Those who I know buy alot say that you must use their escrow service and taobao is pretty good at backing it up. It really depends, but legitimate businesses usually try not to make too many waves with customers because the word getting around fast and there are big fees to them for chargebacks. |

^ Exactly. eBay / PayPal is the same.
A lot of people in China are totally unaware of their chargeback rights even with Chinese bank issued Visa / MasterCard / American Express cards. |

Waouh I see.... But the other solution is to pay at delivery, don't you think so?? This is a GREAT idea!!! No more questions, no more problem or bank card issues! Just order online, choose your delivery date and time, Check your purchase and pay once you're satisfied, just PERFECT! |

/\ its called COD. Cash on Delivery. Some provide this service some do not.
Now how are you managing to mix this up with paying by cards? |

True but this isn't the US mate. Given the 16th century banking systems they got here, you might end up waiting half an year to recover your money if at all. |

Not exactly. I have initiated half a dozen chargebacks here using my ICBC, Bank of China and even Merchants Bank credit cards and all went through smoothly. The money is instantly credited on a provisional basis (just like in the States) and maximum 3 months you have the final result. I've never lost a chargeback case.
Again, a lot of Chinese people are not aware of this and most expats would assume, based on their experiences with the Chinese banking system, that it would be FUBAR, but this is one thing that they do right. |

Yeah, COD is also great, but there is still an unacceptable amount of risk involved. You must pay the delivery agent before they give you the package. What happens after you open it and discover a brick inside? You'd be truly SOL. |

^ Sure.
At least in the processing of chargebacks they do have their act together. The whole process is done on the Visa / MasterCard / AmEx network interface so there is little room for them to screw it up. A couple of things to consider, though: a) write up your chargeback request using idiot-proof language so there is no room for confusion and b) make sure you yourself have a copy of the relevant card association chargeback manual.
Regarding "b", I had a chargeback a couple of months ago because I bought something from the French Mint which the screwballs misdirected twice and, after about 8 months of messing around with them, decided to just charge back the whole order. The bank said I was 60 days over the time limit, but I showed them in the manual where the time limit was extended because of misdelivery and subsequent reshipments. After that everything went smoothly as it always has before.
If you are considering shopping at Amazon.com, you needn't worry at all. Amazon.com is simply the best online experience I ever had. Any problems at all and their customer service people will make things right.
But if you ever use PayPal, make sure you fund it with a credit card. They are notorious bastards and will let someone screw you over and then try to hold you -- the victim -- liable. Without chargeback rights, you can easily get screwed over by them. |

The worst that has happened to me with Amazon.com is that my stuff hadn't arrived after a one-month wait. I sent them a message and they reshipped the entire order. The new order arrived in about 2 weeks and a month later the first order also arrived.
I sent them a message about how to handle the situation and the guy said, "Don't worry. No need to send anything back. Sell the duplicate items to your buddies." God bless Amazon.com! |

Yes, Amazon rebated my Visa card after a web stuff up about CDs (in Australia). Visa also rebated me automatically after I got billed for 5 UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) when I ordered just 1. It took 3 days.
Talking to Amazon is like talking to my next cubicle for a fix up.
As far as Taobao :
My (Chinese) wife ordered a range of shirts delivered to our home. When they arrived, they were the wrong size and WRONG pattern. She immediately hammered Taobao and got Sh*t sorted out in 24 hours.
Delivered by the boy 2 days later.Correct size and pattern, no questions asked.
Good service, I'd say but keep your Chinese Doberman ready on their 800 line.
I'm about to order a significant item through the web from China on taobao.com, using wifes' credit card in escrow. I'll let you know.
Same as us, we I don't accept crappy service from anyone.
Dissatisfied on-line Chinese buyers are awesome. Get someone to help you, and make sure your purchase is delivered 4 days before the event, then hide it. |

You look very gentleman Fabrice... I wish my boy would be like you!!!!!! By the way, I already ordered a Moët & Chandon champagne at yangjiu.com
As I thought that using credit card online in China is not really safe, I used the COD system and paid only once I received my champagne. The COD system is very attractive, easy and particularly safe! |

That's nice from you, but sometimes I have nothing of a gentleman... Thanks for your advice, I'll have a look on that website later. I just hope their service is great and that I'll have a Veuve Clicquot champagne just as I wish! Any idea for luxury style and brands? I don't know pretty much about it actually! |

However I've seen an announcement in classifieds rubric about mymingpai.com dealing with luxury. I had a look and it deals with famous people's outfits, luxury brands, latest fashion trends.... So if you want to learn something about luxury, have a look on and I'm pretty sure that you'll learn many more about luxury! and fashion!!
I hope this could help you. |

COD system is a scam as you are not allowed to open the package until after you have paid. If you then open it and find a bunch of old magazines instead of what you ordered the Post Office cannot refund your money.
By the way, I have seen mymingpai.com and some friends ordered stuff from them. It's another scam! Everything is fake, overpriced and really crappy quality. |

Speaking of potential scams...
Heiata, Fabrice & larcenciel85, i really don't understand why you all just don't talk to each other instead of coming online to tell each other about these alleged websites given that you all are posting from the same office. |
