I live in a villa on Gu Dai Road and plan to own an Ancient English Shepherd. Anyone can tell me if this is a good idea?
I also need to find a credible pet dealer in Shanghai. |

I think owning a dog out here is a bad idea, unless you have no choice, have a way of taking the dog back to your home country when you leave and have a car and driver. Many people I know have bought or claimed a dog here and they tend to keep it a couple of years then fob them off when they leave to go home or the dog has many physical problems. If you are very keen to get a dog maybe try SCAA for dog re-homing. We have a dog we brought from home (as we had no-one to take her and I am of the thinking a dog is for life) and believe me its not easy, saying that I don't regret bringing her. I can recommend a good vet, boarding and groomers if you decide to get one. You must get them licensed too which can be hard work. |

As a pet owner and and a foster parent for SCAA my husband and I have personally rescued over 35 dogs off of the streets of Shanghai and China. I do not recommend you buying a dog but instead please consider adopting from SCAA. These so called breeders here in Shanghai are just puppy farmers who don't care one bit about those puppies or their outcome. They are also going to charge you through the roof for this dog especially if it comes from a pedigreed line. I am all for owning a dog as mine have brought me great comfort and joy and have been with me for the last 10 years here but please do it responsibly.
Also Taffyinchina is right "A dog is for life" and you must seriously consider the fact that when you leave that the dog goes back with you. And registration is a must in Shanghai to protect your dog and keep him safe. Good Luck!!! |

Don't buy a dog in China. It is not worth the while. I tried that once when I just came. The small little cute puppy died within 2 days after arrival and during the 48 hours with her, I have tried all doctors and places to save it. After that, I cried for 2 weeks.
If you really want a dog, adopt one. There are plenty around needing adoption after being abandoned when the owners find them grown up and not cute anymore.
But Jolynne is right about a dog is for life. I took in my old dog from the adoption place because they had him in the cage for 6 months (in total) and was about to put him down. I wanted to go and get a puppy. In the end I picked the old dog to give it a chance. Also, thinking he will not last out my stay here in China!! But being fed well, taken care of well, he is better than ever now.
If you really need one, adopt one. |
