There's something to be said for avoiding cheap pork though

thanks missrain, I'm guessing the lady who wants the english menu might want some more pointers than that.

Point at the big tray of greasy dumplings and say

"Yi Lee-ang!"

If you want the soup too

"Yi wan niu rou tang!"

Better still! Point right at the people eating there and say:" wo yao yi yang de, xiexie!" "I will have the same, thanks!" Laughing

Hmm....

Din Tai Fung
Vegetables = 29-38 rmb
Noodles = around 35rmb
Dumplings/XiaoLongBao = about 30 for 4-5 or about 60 for 10

So absolutely no idea how you spent 200 on just that!

Went there last night,

10 pork dumplings
5 pork and sticky rice dumplings
2 lots of sichuan noodles
1 egg fried rice
1 green vegetables
1 pork chop
1 cold cucumber dish
3 fresh juice
1 jasmine tea

and the bill was 350rmb... we were all satisfied, the dumplings were great, although i must recommend the SuperBrandMall outlet over XinTianDi for the girls bathroom and great view! (no.. not the view in the bathroom!)

Agreed Din Tai Fung is a bit pricey. The one in Superbrand Mall has some tables with view of the Bund. However, I still think their branch at Peace Plaza, ShuiCheng Lu, close to Gubei Carrefour has the absolute best service and my vote for the absolute best xiao long pao Smile

Steamed Dumplings, Din Tai Fung - 4 locations around town are by far the best staemed dumplings.
Fried Dumplings - Shanghai #1 Food Store , Nanjing Road East (a few hundred feet east of peoples square, across the plaza from the Royal Meridien), all the way to the back of the store, pay first and take you receipt then stand in line. 4 dumplings 4.5rmb!! A coke for 2 rmb across the alley at Redi makes an AWESOME lunch!! I can be seen weekly on a bench in front on Nanjing East enjoying lunch!!

The best dumplings can be found at a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant with four tables located on panyu lu here you can get a full meal for 10 kuai.... Oh, how I wish I hadn't moved.
But seriously, oftentimes I've found the best place to find dumplings are at a.... surprise, dumpling house! Smile Go into any tiny mom-and-pop restaurant on any non-commercial road and ask "shuijiao you meiyou?"
(Better yet, if you see a cart outside one of these shops, they often sell top-notch xiaolongbao.)
I stay away from wontons unless they're steamed (don't know why, just something I've picked up), and I rarely go into chains.
Gil wonton uses frozen wontons, which technically is still hygienic but I'm not a fan of it.

the most famous place is in Yu Yuan garden, the 2nd floor restaurant in the old style building...always a long line of Chinese waiting to get in. The best I've had in China.

Once again Coffeehawk hits the mark By far the best for me....There are mostly Chinese people there so I guess it's ok for them...

Actually I think the best xiaolong bao are not at Yuyuan at all. They are good but not the best. The best are near the Shanghai International Studies University, opposite the Chi Feng Lu Qinggui Station. This restaurant has canteen style seating on the 1st floor and restaurant style seating on the 2nd floor. The restaurant is next to the Shangwai Bingguan under the gaojia. Best xiaolong bao in Shanghai by far and they are really quite a decent size, more like dalong bao Smile
