Post subject: Blogging platform

Hello,

I intend to start a blog in English, and I would be interested in some advice about which hosting service to select (Blogger, Wordpress, etc.).

My main concerns:
- performance (readers in both Western and Asian countries)
- blocked sites. For example in the past I has some issues accessing blogspot sites from China, it seems to work better now.

Thanks for your help!

Wordpress rocks, self-hosted for better control

Yep, Wordpress is the best I have seen so far.

It won't be self-hosted, so in this case we are talking about using http://wordpress.com/. Any comments on performance and access issues with this specific provider? For example I was unable to open their chinese site http://zh.wordpress.com/.

You don't want to use their Chinese site. Use the regular one with a proxy.

Well, if it is not self-hosted you won't be able to guarantee it won't be blocked at some time in the future. You can't have it both. Wordpress might be accessible today but not two months from now.

Why not self host? It costs about 4 dollars a month and you don't have the risk of being blocked, ever. I use Wordpress and it's the best thing since sliced bread!

Thanks all for the advice.
I have started a blog on Wordpress, I'll see how long it lasts... I can already see the limitations, compared to a self-hosted solution, so I'll definitely look into this in the long run.

not in some cases.

your server, specially if you use shared hosting, can be blocked at anytime. who knows whether we can access blu3h0st or dr3@mh0st or not tomorrow? Razz

4 dollars? that's a nice price...which service provider do you use?

There are literally thousands of hosts in the US so I think the chances are pretty slim of being blocked, but you're right, it could happen. Certainly much less chance than Wordpress or Typepad or Blogger though.

It happens quite more often that you think...Usually it is not the host itself that is blocked, but rather a specific IP address or server. For examples many of the Yahoo small business customers saw their sites blocked in China while Yahoo small business itself can be accessed fine.

Definitely recommend WordPress and the following:
1) Your own domain
2) Your own hosting server (I recommend Bluehost.com)

That's not your own. That's Bluehost's. Not the same thing at all.

It's not impossible to run your own, even here in China.

Using Wordpress here, I'd definitely recommend it, very user friendly when you first get started.
Don't host at Wordpress, as the others have said you'll probably find it's blocked in China and you've paid for nothing, host at bluehost or somewhere similar.
