Post subject: Hiring a Chinese rep vs. establishing a rep office

We have an engineering consulting company in the US and are considering establishing a rep office in China. Another alternative, which would delay the rep office decision, is to hire a Chinese national to try to develop business for our company. Assuming we can get the "right person", I would appreciate any comments about this approach to enter the Chinese market.

Hello STWR, you have an interesting challenge. I'm facing the same challenge, although I already have an engineering consulting company located here in Shanghai. Chinese laws on this matter can be a little complicated for a rep office. And yet finding a local person to be a manager who is trustworthy is also a challenge. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good people here, but long distance is a challenge for control.

Also the new labor laws are a little difficult for a foreign entity to hire local people if you hope to stay strictly legal. Some companies, such as the DNV Norwegian Testing Agency, set up as representative office and then hire engineers through a contract company.

It sounds like we're facing similar situations but I might be further on the learning curve. Give me an email sometime if interested, we can discuss some more. shaun_hogan@hansho.com

Good luck.

The biggest risk of hiring a local is that the person will take bonuces fron suppliers and, as the bonuces will be much more than salary you pay, it's not so hard to consider who the person will serve after all: beloved countrymates, who pay more Smile That is the bigest risk and chalange when hiring locals.

why not find a chinese partner in china and you share with 50% of the company and you both make the money and share the profit?

have chinese people to help you that will probably much easier for you to do business here

I actually worked for this company when I first moved to Shanghai that was doing something i thought brilliant. They would hire someone for you and manage them logistically, while you would be his boss and the only one to manage his work.

So, they would help you hire someone, then this person would get a desk/office in their office and you would have a contract with this company. They were taking care of all of the payments (cause you cannot pay a Chinese in foreign currency and you cannot pay in RMB if you don't have a rep office here). Also, all business your company got went through this company (so if you sold something, if there were actual goods, they would take care of the transportation, logistics, storage, everything, if no goods, they would handle payments, letters of credit, etc. )

Anyway, I was not doing Sales for this company, so don't remember exactly how it worked, but I know it was perfect for people who just wanted to test the market without investing a lot upfront. And it wasn't very expensive -- but I don't remember anything about the prices...

If you are interested, I still have the contact of a couple of people there, can put you in touch...
