| Post subject: Root Canal and a Crown - Where is best? |
My wife went today to Parkway with a toothache and the dentist advised she needed a root canal and a crown. However, my wife rejected proceeding as she did not have confidence in the dentist she saw.
Not absolutely certain she needs a root canal, but certainly she needs some significant dentistry. I take any kind of surgery very serious and want to ensure that whatever we do is really NEEDED and if done is done REALLY RIGHT.
Your suggestions welcome.

Get a 2nd opinion. I used Arrail in Beijing and found them to be fine. The have a branch in Lippo Centre, Huai Hai Rd but I cannot vouch for the consistency of service between Beijing and Shanghai. |

I went to DDS dental a few times for the same thing.
I was impressed by Dr. Sun...he is low-profile, not trying to rip you off even though their prices at the clinic are not small, but I was delighted of the result and all asnwers the guy gave me before I decided to have a crown placed.
In different occasions, I saw 2 other doctors, 1 Singaporean lady I think and a Chinese lady, and NO, not my cup of tea...Dr. Sun, also Chinese, is my favorite there
I've sent at least 4 friends so far and all of them were satisfied by the result.
I know there are 2 or 3 clinincs in town, I go to the one opposite Bonbon, on Huaihuai lu (bao Qing rd)...check their website (www.ddsdentalcare.com) I think...
Good luck and call to book an appointment! |

IMD in Xintiandi. You won't regret. Tel: 63843010. My friend just did a full mouth reconstruction - very reasonably priced although not cheap, of course. But the quality is guaranteed! |

The root canal is the most difficult part to do well. If you want a guaranteed best job, then you really want to see a specialist (endodontist), but not sure how many are available in Shanghai.
DDS has someone working who is advertised as an endodontist (see below from DDS website). I think if I needed root canal in Shanghai I would probably want to see her (or another endo speicalist if you can fine one)
"Dr. Ada Gao, DDS/Endodontist
* Certified in DDS degree, the Dental School of Sichuan University, China
* Master Degree in Endodontics at Sichuan University, China.
* Senior doctor & lecturer practicing in the affiliated dental hospital of medical university.
* Specializing in endodontics( Root Canal Therapy) & general dentistry .
* Member of Chinese Dental Association.
* Conversant in English and Chinese."
Good luck |

I second Dr.Ada Gao at DDS. She's very good (and meticulus) and won't try to rip you off. I've been to her a few times by the way.... |

And I'd place a definite vote AGAINST Dr. Sun at DDS.
Not only was his root canal technique fairly hopeless (he didn't hose down the nerve probs on many successive visits), but he also (according to a subsequent dentist) "missed one of the roots".
Which is why I had further dramatic (read excruciating) problems later on with the same tooth.
I can't certify this, but (again according to the second dentist) that same tooth was also completely weakened/cracked by his work and now cannot be crowned - an extraction and implant is now the only option. $$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!
Plus, his attitude to anaesthetic (and injection skill) is more than slightly barbaric - definitely the worst experience I've ever had in that regard. He might as well have thrown the needle in from across the room.
Just my personal experience, but I definitely wouldn't recommend him to anyone who I was fond of. |

I went to Dr. Feng at Shanghai Shenda in FC....he decided to repair it instead of replace my crown(didn't try to rip me off). Both he and his assistant spoke excellent English. The office was very nice and they were very attentive to me(I walked in and he was there right away - less than 1 hour to complete the repair of my crown). The best was he charged 300rmb total....not the 4000 or more quoted my many expat dentists. I highly recommend him and plan to go to him for other dental work when needed. |

Do all my heavy-duty dental work in Bangkok (I go to Bangkok Dental Clinic). Excellent work, and the difference in price may pay for a mini-vacation too.... |
