Post subject: Laptop Repair?

I have an old IBM T41 which has been a great computer and even though it is now a back up, I would like to keep it running.

Seems that the USB ports are no longer operational and I was hoping to have it fixed. Anyone have any recommendations on a good repair location? I need a new battery too.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I sent a PM to him a couple of weeks ago about buying a new laptop and never heard back. Didn't know if he was still in business or not.

Anyone else?

@HDXLR - must have missed it, I get a lot of PM's.

IMHO, not worth fixing, new laptops are cheap these days, and repair fee's likely to be not worth it for the value of the laptop.

Not worth if financially but there is a sentimental attachment. I have a use for a low power computer but it needs USB ports. Figured it would be a board swap kind of deal so wouldn't be too difficult to do for someone. That and the fact that the pay scale for technicians seems to be lower here.

Guess I could buy another one and just put this on the shelf. It was the last gift my wife gave me so I kind of want to keep it around.

Needs to see port condition to determine which part mulfunctions.

If you take the subway to baoshan station, then go across the street past the kfc, keep walking past the junk stores on your right, elevated subay on your left, after about two blocks you will see a 4 or 5 floor building on your right with a lot of electronics crap. The whole area is full of junkstore electronics but this building seems to have some places with slightly more advanced equipment. I've seen decent-looking resolder equipment and of course, a ton of laptop scroungers & parts-replacers.

Someone here should be able to replace the mainboard. Perhaps there's someone there who can do board level repair. Look downstairs (basement) especially.

But then, I'm on ignore so these free directions are useless to you Razz

Its called Qiu Jiang Lu.

Where I send some of my repairs actually, but in this case I don't think its worth it.

IBM batteries are also a non-starter. IBM puts a TPM chip inside the battery which dies after a predetermined period whether the batteries are good or not, so replacing the batteries inside doesn't help. You need to find a chip also, and those only come out of new(ish) batteries.

Sentiment is hard to measure. We hang onto stuff all our lives because a girl we had a crush on in third grade touched it.

Then we die and our grandkids toss it all into the dumpster.

Oh well.

That is exactly the kind of recommendation I was looking for. Thank you. I understand that it is not monetarily worth fixing but it would mean a lot to me to have it around and working. I'm pretty sure I know where that is but wasn't sure about just taking it there. I will give it a try.

I unbury this thread.

I need to replace the screen of my laptop (there are strips that appear on it, apparently the circuits inside do not commute).

I was thinking about going to Xujiahui.

However, how much am I supposed to pay for this ? 600 kuais ?

^I had replaced my broken Thinkpad X60 screen at Qiu Jiang Lu (see computersolutions post above) for 600 + labor (50) kuai in April. The price depends on the spec of screen and laptop manufacture. It's a good idea to do your homework on taobao for the market price of a replacement screen. There are tons of sellers for computer parts on taobao.

Labor for simple repair or replacement should cost no more than 50 kuai anywhere in China.
