It depends on what you're used to, but it doesn't really get cold until December. And then it's not really cold, just really chilly.

september is fine.

late december the temps will change and as littleworm said, comfort levels are dependent on you. personally, i was miserable from january through march... just not used to living in a place that didn't offer double-paned windows, insulation or strong heating. other people were fine.

note that shanghai has a very damp winter so while the temps are not that cold, the chill gets into your bones and there is no escaping it.

It's not so much that the winters are cold outside, just that nowhere is heated indoors. As such, winters are far more miserable than they should be. As Magnolia says, the damp, the lack of heating and insulation, all combine to make it rather unpleasant here from about December to February.

Can't you buy portable/space heaters for indoors, or is it just too prohibitively expensive?

Actually, you may still feel a bit hot in October in daytime. But when in the evening, the temperture goes down quickly. The temperture range between daytime and evening in Spt and Oct is big.

You can and I do but electricity bills shoot up because of it.

i always used space heaters in addition to the regular heaters, trenchwire. still less expensive than running a/c in the summer months.

It gets down to 0 C but sometimes it just feels colder because the cement buildings just soak the ambient temperature.. plan on wearing a few layers... even inside or running a very high heating bill.

Exactly.

Another problem all heating aircondicioners work worse if outside is less than 5C, almost don't work bellow zero and if there is something like -5C no heating works at all.

I run 3 x 2KW still was cold. My dream would be central GAS heating.

as far as i understand the OP is lucky not to stay in shanghai during winter. she/he is only concerned about september. sep. and oct. sometimes even nov. are quiete mild. as for heating ..well whoever decided the AC's are the proper systems for shanghai buildings, well ...... (i suggest to fill in the blank with your own opinions on this) Wink) i am afraid that we, sooner than we think, will not be able to afford the AC bills.

@ administrator ..same wish here but you need to insulate the walls as well. only then your precisously generated heat is likley to stay were it belongs.

Winters here are very wet, couple that with bad insulation and many places not even using heating - class rooms, cheaper Chinese restaurants, makes for a very uncomfortable season.

This January was especially ultra cold - I actually got sick and spent lucid dream induced nights in Motel 168. Not really a nice experience. Doesn't it also rain in September?

In my last apartment, I had to wear winter outdoor clothes and a stocking cap just to sit in the living room to watch TV. Giant sliding glass door was not so appealing then.

Yes much as people have already said. Using a few oil radiators and keeping them running at a low temp almost 24/7 stopped my apartment getting too cold last winter. You have to be prepared for the electricity bills though.

Thanks for all replies!!!
It seems like the weather in September isn't different from Thailand's much , about 25-30'c.

But I heard that last year it was snowy in shanghai. So is it possible that it'll snow again in this year.

Thanks

It snows pretty much every year in Shanghai, just most years it is a series of dustings of snow. Last year was a whopper!!

It all sounds like a good excuse to spend Winter in Shanghai in the pub.
