Where can I go to hire a piano and what sort of quality is available? Are they usually near new? |

Maybe someone at a piano store could help?
There's a large piano store in XuJiaHui Grand Gateway, there is a selection of pianos in Yohan/BaBaiBan in Pudong, but they're a department store not a dedicated shop. I also thought I saw a piano store on XinZha Lu or Beijing Lu between XiKang lu and Taixing Lu,, but I am not certain. |

Normally the piano won't talk to you directly, you will have to discuss it with a piano broker |

Thanks for your helpful reply CoffeeHawk. I've seen lots of pianos for sale on Jinling Lu but just thought someone here might know offhand to save me trying to get across what I wanted to ask in a store using my pidgin Chinese. |

Hi, Im wondering if there are any stores that mainly has pianos for rental. Im thinking of renting a piano instead of buying one because my stay here in shanghai will not be too long. |

Depending on how picky you are about the quality of pianos and who will be playing them, there are several options.
1) You can buy a brand new Chinese model like Pearl River for less than 10K but in 2-3 years, they will be worth like 5K. The quality/sound of Pearl River and other Chinese models are not very good.
2) I know of a store near Xujiahui that refurbishes Yamaha and Kawaii pianos (direct from Japan). These pianos are 30+ years old but are in excellent condition, sold for about 15-20K. In 2-3 years, they are still worth about 15-20K (considering they are already 30+ years to begin with!!) The sound and quality is superb because these pianos were originally made in Japan and for the most part, were used as furniture and decorations.
3) Rent pianos -- I've heard about this option but don't actually know of a place. I did hear that 3 years of rental buys you the same piano. So it might not be worth it.
I recommend option 2 if you have the budget and want to deal with selling them later. |

There is a Duke piano center on Changning Lu pass ZhongShanXi Lu which sell and rent their Duke (Chinese made) pianos. I was there about 2 years ago. Their pianos were selling from RMB23,000 up and they rent for RMB300/ month. |
