Post subject: Things to do in Shanghai for foreign "outside people&qu

Some of you might be familiar with the term, "waidiren", which means a person who's outside of his native city. I've been living in China for some years now, and I'm in Shanghai for a few days on business. It's mostly meetings, so I'll have a lot of free time on my hands. What can I do that's interesting? I've already been to all the touristy areas a million times, art museum, river cruise, and I couldn't care less about shopping. What are some actual interesting things to do in Shanghai? Nothing too far from the central city - I still have work to do...I might have meetings from 10 to lunch, and then a dinner meeting, but nothing heavy. Oh, and I'm alone, I don't know if that makes any difference. I can speak enough Chinese to get around, but not enough to enjoy an attraction with no English. I'm not necessarily against touristy places like museums, but I've been to all the common ones.

Moganshan Lu is a decent change of pace and scenery. Go and laugh at the art.

First of all, don't address yourself as "waidiren" if you are not Chinese. "waiguoren" is the correct term for foreigners. If you are Chinese, then say "your city+ren", for instance: I'm a "Beijing ren". "waidiren" often carries offensive meaning for some reason.

Second, if I were you, I would go get a spa treatment or foot massage since labor is cheap here in general. There are lots of awesome restaurants around, as well.

If you are alone plus lonley, bars/night clubs will be fun. Here's a list of bars with good reputation:

spot
blarney
cottons
face
oscars
mural

I hope this can help。 Good luck!

Have you been to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall (Museum)?

It is really pretty awesome if you have never been to visit and it is right downtown at people's square. You will be able to pick out your hotel, and other buildings you know in Shanghai from the huge model that has most all of the Shanghai buildings.

The Science & Technology museum (right on line 2 metro) is also fun to do if you have not done that one.

Oh, sure, I know what waidiren means. I'm often rudely treated by Shanghai foreigners, or at least I used to be, when I would talk to people that I didn't know. I've been cured of that by relentless stares, avoidance of eye contact, and people pretending I didn't say anything.

I'll check out the two museums. any other ideas?
