| Post subject: L visas still wonky ? |
Now that the Olympics are finally over, have L visas returned to normal ? Have a couple people coming over fairly soon, if we need scads of bullshite documents I'd better get on it ... |

I got my L visa (tourist purposes) last week from the Washington DC Embassy in the US. Gave me a 1yr multiple entry with a plane ticket and hotel reservations.
Caveat: I was in China until early this year with a work visa so maybe that's why they were nicer |

You have been able to get 1 year multiples from the Chinese Embassy in the US all through the Games. Evidently there was some reciprocal agreement signed on costs of visas and this allowed it to happpen. |

Paraolympics are still happening. The vast majority of opinions I've found point at October 15th as a date for things to return to "normal?".
That being said, I've just returned to China last week from a 4 day vacation in Los Angeles. I had no choice but to travel to the USA for a new Z. I arrived Wednesday afternoon and had my new Z Thursday morning...and wasn't even charged an express fee. |

L Visa issued today in UK for familly member visiting me in China...........3 month visa, issued in 2 hours, £50 cost, usual documents required, visitors passport, travel tickets, letter of invitation from me (origional not copy or mail) residency permit for me to prove i'm here, my passport details, lease document for my apartment in China..............as I say, just the usual stuff! |

That's the usual stuff for the UK ? Eeeuw 
In the US it's always been fill out a one-page form and give them two full-face photos. Pay the money, pick up in about five days. That's it. Or was .....
Once upon a time you could get the visa in Shanghai after you got off the plane. Never had the balls to try that.
I've ordered up the invitation letters just in case. Better safe than sorry |

The difficult bit is usually proving who you are visiting, if its a familly member take EVERYTHING that can be a link to China inc marrage cert if its wife/husband.
Person in the que yesterday in UK embassy was turned away because she was visiting her brother in China, she did not have any legal proof she was his sister.............that is very difficult to prove!
Read the small print VERY carefully on the application form and the guidance notes, anything wrong and your application is rejected.
Another reject yesterday was because the guy had not glued his picture to the application document, he had them loose............after waiting 1 hour in a line he was sent away to get glue! |

At Hong Kong visa office yesterday and still has sign up clearly stating you need to go to home country to apply for tourist visa. HK residents applying need to have return plane ticket and hotel booking or letter of invitation from a friend with a copy of their lease.
I managed to get a one month due to circumstances (lost passport & current resident permit), so it can be done, but you need a good reason and as much paperwork as possible.
In short, I doubt it. |

I travelled to Hong Kong to get a new visa on 2nd Sept.
I used the China Travel Service on Hennesy Avenue.
They did a 1 month L visa, would not do longer term.
For info: cost was 1200 HK$ including the extra for 1 day turnaround.
The visa application was made 2pm , I picked up the passport 6pm the following day.
I was required to provide a ticket return to Hong Kong.

Not sure what JTB Travel in Hong Kong are offering nowadays but for a “L” visa you could pay them an extra HK D 200 and they would some how arrange a ticket out of China and proof of accommodation. Maybe give them a call at (852) 2739-8911 and see what they offer nowadays. I've heard that after the Para Olympics finish on the 20th September then things will improve.
We can only live in hope:-)

1200HKD for a 1 month visa sounds like a rip off!
If paralympics end on 20th, then we might still need to wait a week for the entry-exit staff to come back from their 'holiday'. Seriously, I hope the visa waivers and such come back.
The chances of the current arrangement of things being permanent is very slim .. right? |

Anyone know if any chance of extending L visa at moment without leaving Shanghai?
I lost my passport in HK along with residency permit, now have an emergency passport that is valid for 7 months and am on a tourist visa 30 days single entry was all they would give me.
Trying to get new passport but need birth certificate which appears to be stuck in the mail. Now run of time to go that route, so hoping I can either extend L visa or get residency permit into my emergency passport. Old resident permit expired in November, even if they can just reissue that it will buy me enough time to get a proper passport organised. |

2 weeks ago, I was told at the PSB that you can extend another 30 days as a tourist, but that's it. I think you should make a trip personally, or hire the services of an agency.
I highly doubt that you will get a residency permit with your temp. passport.
You said your residential permit expired in nov, what were you using until now?
Your predicament sure seems more screwed than mine... |

Sorry, old resident permit would have expired this coming November.
Good to hear there is a hope of extending tourist permit, another 30 days would make the world of difference to me |

I just got my guest's L visa extended for another 30 days. Anybody know if I need to register her again at local police station ? We had done that when she first came here 30 days ago. Thanks. |

To my knowledge, if you haven't changed your address then you don't need to re-register as you are already registered. That's what we have been told by the local police but sometimes it seems that everyone has a different case.

I registered on my L visa last week at the Police station on Xinzha lu / Xikang lu.
Sign in the office said every time you get a new visa you need to re register. This is the same for resident visa, whenever it is changed in any way you need to re register.
Only resident visa holders who have not changed address don't need to re register every time they enter the country. Every one else needs to. |

At the moment you can renew an L visa twice (each time 30 days) before you have to leave the Country.
Last month I renewed my L visa in Shanghai and the PSB phoned me to ask me to re-register with them eventhough I hadn't left the country...on the Temp Form there is an expiry date which corresponds with your Visa ..if you get a new visa your Temp registration form should needs to be updated accordingly |

Like lordlunchalot said.... when you change your visa, you must re-register but you don't need anything else except your passport which will be scanned in their system again together with the new info on the NEW visa.
I guess that they will now be able to knock on your door if you're over stayed your visa  |

Does it make a difference if expiration date is left blank of your Temporary Residence form? This field is left blank on mine and does not relate in any way directly that I can tell to my old (cancelled) visa. |

I think the idea is that they want to be sure that you're legally moving in and out of China and if you're not (ie. illegal) they want to know where to find you hence ........the latest visa info and address. |

Don't worry, if you got a print out from the PSB then the info is in their database now. Make sure you go down there to re-register if you've got a new visa. |
