Post subject: Hotels in Nanjing

I'm having a few days in nanjing next weekend, going to do the tourist stuff, hang out by the lake and such and such.

Does anyone have any tips for good hotels around there? Everywhere on ctrip seem pretty bland and business-like, somewhere with more character would be good. Doesn't have to be cheap.

New Century is okay but more character ? In China ? I can think of three - one in yang shuo, one in yichang and one in guangxi kind of in the middle of nowhere. Two of those had no character either but the scenery was good.

I like the sofitel there- it's quite new.

I wouldn't say it has a great deal of character but it is comfortable with nice furnishings and last time i was there it was great value

What's your budget?
If you prefer staying in a quiet and nice place, check this one:

There locates another hotel in Zhongshan Mountain national park. (中山陵国际青年旅馆)Perhaps you can try the food there, price is reasonable and good is very good.

And around the lakes are there many choices though.

I use to be a student in Nanjing and there are a few options for hotels but none that I think really have any character or charm to them. There is a youth hostel located on Shanghai Lu in the drum tower area that is great. Its in an old villa that has been renovated in March. The people there are great and it is in a great location of Nanjing next to a few universities and only minutes to Xinjiekou (Downtown) and the Xuanwu Lake. Plus, you can take bus #20 all the way to Purple Mountain. The gulou subway stop is only about a 10-15 minute walk. The hostel name is Jasmine Youth Hostel located near the intersection of Shanghai Lu and Hankou Xi Lu. They have a single room with a private bathroom for something around 200rmb (maybe cheaper, not too sure). This would be the place that comes to mind when you are talking charm and character!!! Hope that helps. [url]

No budget really, but under 1,000 per night would be good.

Mastersplinter - that does sound like a fun place, but I'm not really in the first flush of youth so don't really fancy a youth hostel.

leidalohou- no travelling prostitute on this trip, but it's something to bear in mind.

The Sofitel is way more expensive than other big hotels on ctrip, is it worth the extra compared to, say the Sheraton?

no....

BTW. If you stay at the Sheraton.

The best Italian joint in town is down the street....

There is a Walking/Food street out the back door....About 200 meters down.

All the Italians in town go there....

I got a great deal on the Sofitel Nanjing Galaxy a couple of years ago. 598 per night. Very nice for the money. Good location too.

FYI, Nanjing taxi's are the worst I have seen in Asia. Crooks would be too nice a word.

The Sofitel is now 979 per night. No breakfast.
Any other suggestions? Is it better to stay by the lake?

I would recommend the sofitel over the sheraton if they were the same price. Sofitel has a touch more class and European feel, and a nice pool/rec are then the Sheraton. DongJiao is another good choice as well. If you don't need to stay in the city center by far the nicest hotel in Nanjing would be the Sofitel Zhongshan. About 20 min outside the city. Beautiful place to relax and play some golf enjoy the grounds and facility.

All in all you really can't go wrong with any of the ones listed-see which one would be willing to cut you a deal.

I am going to Nanjing first week of November for a conference at the International Expo. My partner will join me and work from the hotel. I cannot decide if we should go for the Sofitel Zhoangshan (good deal) or Sheraton (slightly more expensive). Is the Sofitel Zhoangshan really only 20 minutes from the city? And how far to the International Expo? And is it easy to get taxis? I suppose I am like the CowboyUp - I generally prefer Sofitel hotels to Sheraton. Would the Sofitel Zhoangshan be a good place to explore the heritage sites over the weekend?

It truly depends how much time you guys want to stay at the hotel. If you want to be out and about seeing the city and are just coming back to the hotel to sleep then stay downtown. If you are going to have some time to enjoy the surroundings of the hotel property stay at the Zhongshan.

Thanks. Well, we are not really planning to be out in the city all day. And we want to stay in a comfortable place. So, we might go for the Sofitel Zhoangshan unless we get a very good last minute offer from Sofitel Galaxy.
