They've razed the western block and replaced it with name-brand shops. Come September the eastern end is due for the same. Besides putting these small mostly family-owned restaurants out of business, we're losing a major tourist attraction, but apparently the old Wujiang Lu doesn't fit in with the urban planners' vision of the city of the future. Go now before it's gone forever. |

Yangs Fried Dumplings will hopefully upgrade to fit new building style, they earn enough money and it’s the only place worth going to on that road for me. All others can be found anywhere, although the atmosphere is pretty special too I guess I love the quaint way the garbage bins are piled up in the middle of the road. Surprisingly it doesn’t stink out the street either! |

and to think the eastern section is already cleaner than it used to be. must have taken quite a powerwashing to get all that grease off the streets. |

Chalk up another miserable "victory" for the technocrats in so-called urban planning. A loss of tradition, culture and diversity that no amount of money or urban schemes like Xin Tiandi or Jiangyeli can ever replace. Hard to blame them really, they are just following standard city-planning as practiced in the west. |

Ahh, ThomasC. You've been here a little longer now, I see. Wait until you wake up and realise you live at aisle 3, shelf 17 of the biggest third-rate big-box imitation city in the eastern hemisphere. I lived in a very cool little city for several years. Then they tore it down, utterly destroyed it. Face.
One day you will rethink your "I'm gonna live in China forever !" feelings. I'm not sure that Chinese people are actually stupid but they sure do a good imitation. |

I can't believe anyone is lamenting the disappearance of Wujiang Rd.
The HK food offerings there were universally abysmal. I was so happy to see a Shagua noodle outlet - until I tasted and realized it was a pale imitation of the Taiwan version, and manned by peasant lowlife to boot. The Shanghainese stuff - 'nuff said, mostly awful. I think there were some OK shengjian in there somewhere. The rest was mostly different shades of revolting.
Good cheap street eats can be found throughout Guangdong BTW. For some reason Shanghai can't seem to manage it. |
