I am currently a registered ShanghaiExpat member, you need to become a member to post here. Now how do I get the free service?

You send them an SMS with the name of a place and they sms the address back in english or chinese.

It's pretty convenient actually, but I haven't used it in ages.

If not mistaken they also send offers to the mobile as well.

It's a clever idea but at least to myself I see the need for using it declining.

Nice avatar by the way hah.

Yep that's all.

They've been around for a while so I'd like to think this is a viable business model.
Your overhead is probably pretty small, think about it. And once more people have
better mobiles, they could start delivering high quality content.

Looks like we will have one less biggot to worry about. These muslims are really nasty evil kitties.
Oh wait, he is a Christian....Ooopsie. So, the guy cannot be possibly bad.

It's just on the register page. When you register, put down your phone number to get one month free service. If you are current members, you need to register a new account again with your phone number.

What? Guanxi is a subscription service now? Isn't this something like the fourth or fifth re-launch of this?

I used Guanxi a few times when I first got to Shanghai. It was pretty useful, especially when going out with a group of friends who don't speak Chinese. It cost a couple of mao to look up an address and get the response back in Chinese.

Then for months there was a series of fiascos involving alleged theft of the Guanxi number, then a re-launch. You had to dial a 1 or something before the number. Then a change of format. blah blah blah... There's a whole bunch of ridiculous ads trying to explain how the thing works. Frankly the whole thing was so annoying that I just quit using it and likely will never go back unless they simplify it.

actually, dial a 1066 is based on carriers, all service numbers have to add that before the orginal one. you will never find a simply service number in China without 1066 or 1065 or 1062 or 10xx

I must say, Guanxi has been a gift from God for my girlfriend and I since we arrived, it's very simple to use and saves us spending 25 minutes trying to communicate with a taxi driver, only to be taken in the wrong direction anyway. All I do is a send an SMS to 95882929 to get a response in English or Chinese and it's never failed me yet, not sure why people think it's complicated?

I found it very useful when i first arrived a couple of years back. Once I got to know my way around I've not had so much use for it but it's a good service. I agree they have had problems with changing numbers and format etc.

Well...how about just paying for the damn service as I don't see anywhere to register for it. I tried the new number listed and it told me that I can't use it. Whatever. Not very good marketing IMHO. No links to register and number doesn't work for pay service and if there is another number for pay service it isn't listed.

Marketing doesn't work if you are like, "here use my little secret that you can't access easily"

Actually you just register on ShanghaiExpat website. If you browse the website without log in with your ShanghaiExpat account, there will be a box on the top direct you to the registration page. If you are already ShanghaiExpat member, you have to register a new account again and put down your cell phone number.

For the paid service, there is another number for it which is 106695882929. Good luck!
