Easiest way is to go into a China Mobile shop and ask. Most of them have at least one English speaking customer service person.

but there are many shops selling them. At the subways, at the digital malls. These places also sell recharge cards. A lot of convenient stores also sell recharge coupons. though you probably want to get someone to show you how to do it once. Again the easiest way is to go into a china mobile shop and say I want to add money to my account.

There is also China unicom in shanghai but I think China Mobile is more popular and widespread.

Bring your passport and perhaps your Police Residence Registration Certificate. Saves a frustrating trip back to your apartment, then back again for what should be a 10 minute transaction.

I'd definitely go with China Mobile and its franchisees. Most China mobile branches have an automated ATM style recharge device. However, since they haven't "cottoned on" to the fact that there some expats who quite frankly can't read the on-screen instructions in Chinese. (Me included).

How's about Press 2 for English Menu, 3 for Farsi, 4 for Russian, 5 for German, 6 for French etc.

I just very politely ask for some help.

I'd avoid China Unicom at all costs. Get a legit smart card and you'll be fine. Just present with appropriate documentation for China Mobile. Surprisingly in China, the staff actually are patient and want to see you happy.

I've just arrived and am also trying to figure out the mobile phone situation. Following your above advice, I presumably just buy a SIM card and there's nothing else to pay other than recharging my card from time to time.
