Post subject: Buying a car in China

I am considering to buy a small utility car for my job and travel around in my spare time, for an amount of 100.000 -120.000 yuan

Considering to pay it cash (don't think there are alternatives here in China), how much is the discount I can ask for and get?

Also, what is a minimum premium for an insurance?

Thank you for your help

Very Happy

You can usually get bank financing, but the minimum down is usually 40% and you need to be on a work-related residence permit.

Sometimes you can get a 3% discount, but depending on the model and availability you may even have to pay a premium.

Insurance depends on what type of insurance you buy. Not sure on the car you are buying, but a guy named Russian Bear might have the answer.

thank you!

I can afford to pay it without a financing, and actually I expected a very low negotiation margin

The model I have in mind is the Nissan Tida you can see in the attached picture, I am seeing more and more around and it probably means the quality/price ratio might be reasonably good

Concerning the insurance, I just need a minimum safe premium one, but have no idea of the price.
three years ago I bought a second hand small car for the company I worked at, I think I remember the basic premium was around 3000 yuan / year.

Hi Under ! Thank you ! I just have some suggestions imho..

About 100.000 rmb: Honda Fit - is another good solution(quality beat all other), also Great Wall SUV, Fiat Weekend, Elantra..
that about me - my next car will be second hand - protect my money. I will take an minibus or miniven.

Usual isurance fees is 3% for 1 year and i may strongly reccomend select an big company , not that car's dealer offered.

can select models by price:

You will need to add for the cost of a registration plate and that is expensive, but it can be sold on when you leave the country, or you can keep the plate for your next car and sell without the plate.

I saw several threads on the license late thing but they seem to be old.
Can anyone give us the latest updates on that?

That is still costly..

All plates in Shanghai sell on auction base and price is 35000 - 40000 rmb for it . That is not median but lowest price Sad

In Nanjing same plate costed for 3000 RMB.

It is possible to buy a non Shanghai plate but there are restrictions on non Shanghai plated cars on the expressways. Plus I have heard you have to get the car serviced in the area you registered and bought. Maybe someone can correct me if that is no longer the case.

some interesting infos can be found here

http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20080120_shanghai_car_plate_is_n ot_investment.htm

restrictions include expresssways, lupu bridge, tunnels

but also as you can see, it seems the average price will drop soon as much as the stock market... Another bubble.

it is the yearly inspection that you must conduct in the place where the car is registered, nothing more

another link for the inspection process here: http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20060402_how_car_annual_checking _works.htm

I am not sure about the plate, but I think it will cost me 2000 yuan in Zhejiang Yuyao.
I am often there, so it will not be a problem to have the car inspected there.

I am still concerned about the very low negotiation margin on the car purchasing price, but as Mr Totomolo rightly points, car market is in a bubble as well, and it's going to deflate just like stock and properties markets did.

Maybe I can try to push for a 5% discount

^ You can try pushing for as much as you can.

On higher priced cars most people can get about 3% and that is after the government increased tax rates. For lower priced models, you may have to actually pay a premium.

Let us know how much of a discount you can get.

So basically whether your residence/work permit is issued in Shanghai or not, you can get a licence plate in any of the provinces surronding Shanghai, is that correct?
If yes, can anyone detail the whole process or provide a link (in Enligh preferably)?
The link http://home.wangjianshuo.com may not be up-to-date given how fast laws change in China.

I see on the news that some dealers, (because buying has been slower than usual during holiday period), are discounting a 100,000 car by 10,000. Also other incentives. Could be a good time to buy.

The shanghai car plate went down a bit last month. Medium price is: 31000 RMB.
The selling price didnot go down much as expected.
The link: www.carrenting.cn might be useful.

I'm guessing that your insurance premium would be about RMB 4,000 to 6,000 / year. The largest component of the insurance fee is probably the third party liability, which will cover you if you hit someone and injure them and / or their property.

Different manufacturers will discount depending on the relative demand for a given model. For example, when we were looking at a Camry last year, it was quite hot in the marketplace. Thus, Toyota gave no discount (regardless of our walking away). On the other hand, the VW dealer was willing to discount the Passat a decent bit because it was losing market share.

I have a good friend who has the Tida. He's been reasonably happy with it so far, even though he's banged it up quite a bit.

thanks lovebox

as you mention, market conditions might influence the purchase

I want to go to try Nissan Tida and Suzuki SX, drive both first, then discuss about the price.
I like Tida cause it's a small economic car that looks quite spacious and well done indide.

Also considering that I will buy in a small town might be an issue to mention, probably buying in Shanghai is another story.

Will let you know..

This was what we paid on an Odyssey

Car: 257800rmb
Insurance: 6900rmb (we will pay according to the bill)
Tax: 22000rmb
Carpet, reverse radar1800rmb
incidental expenses:1500rmb
Plate: 34400rmb
Total is 324400rmb.

Insurrance is more than mentioned here but still really cheap and well worth it in Shanghai - so easy to scratch in traffic

^ Insurance sounds about right. The rate depends on the make, model and price of the car.

If you get financing, you must buy insurance for the entire life of the loan -- in advance.

I also believe that for a 100k car, a fair insurance yearly premium should be around 3k

As I know, the lowest price for TIIDA 1.6 MT is about 90K in Shanghai city. You can find a 4S store to have a trial-drive. The basic insurance premium is about 3K.But you have to pay other fees, such as taxes, registration plate ect.
