I got my N95 from Nokia Hong Kong... easy, English assistance, all accessories in stock. Works great. The downloaded settings mentioned previously got me connected immediately when I returned to Shanghai. If there are other N95 users here, I would be interested in chatting. n95users.com is very helpful but I would like to talk to other local users, for example about the China map, which seems to be detail deficient.

I know! After a few failed attempts with manual settings, I finally found this site and was over the moon!

Fed up with figuring the settings for WAP/MMS/GPRS for your phone? Wish for some OTA (over-the-air) help? Good news for Nokia phone users! I found this site. All you need to do is click on "Get standard settings" and follow the instructions on the window that appears. All you need to do is choose your Nokia phone model, the country you're in, the mobile operator and your phone number. The configurations will be sent to you and you just need to save it in your phone. No fuss, no muss!

Ok, I got a couple of questions about the link I previously provided. It seems it's no longer available. Some days back, Nokia was maintaining their site and today, the page is totally gone.

No worries, I managed to find the direct link to the Nokia Phone Configurator:

https://nokiags.wdsglobal.com/standard?siteLanguageId=118

Good luck!

Hi

I'm using Treo 688, bought in Singapore Starbub a couple of months back. Now in Shanghai, I tried to send/receive emails (my office and personal POP3 emails) but faced some problems. I managed to download the emails via GPRS but when I tried to send out, it doesn't work. I check the settings, and found that the SMTP still sets at Starhub setting (Singapore). I wish to understand, that if I register/change the SMTP settings to:
Outgoing SMTP Server: smtp.17288.com Port: 25
Incoming POP3; pop.17288.com Port: 110
Username: Your Mobile Number
Password: Whatever you entered in registration
"After that you should be able to send/receive mail from your phone/PDA.
The email address is YourNumber@17288.com eg 137xxxxxxx@17288.com"

Will i still be able to download my office emails and when I send out, will my email recipients see a different email address (since i'm using some 137xxxxxxxxx@17288.com to send)?

Any one, any advice?

Thanks!

i just arrived in Shanghai and would like to purchase a local sim for the 2 weeks that i will be in China. But, it must also work in Beijing and Hongkong.
Can someone tell me how i can get a SIM card today still? Do i need to go to a store somewhere?
Also, i would like a card with a data option. that means, i can access the internet via the phone/sim.

I think maybe Lawrence or someone else might lend a hand.

I have just receive this company issued PDA htc TyTNII and my company has a PDA server in europe where a service such as blackberry if offered. I have just set-up GPRS connection by following the very 1st post and it seems as it is working, Comm Mgr says: my name (EDGE) 00:19:32 . Now I have the Larger E in the box on the left, and a smaller E just above the signal stength indicator.

I'm not very sure what this GPRS connection is for. I cannot reach any internet site. But using wifi it is working fine and I can get the web sites up. Maybe I just don't quite understand the GPRS capabilities or there is something wrong with my connection settings

GPRS allows for internet connections. Similar to 3G but older standard I guess.

Mine connects to GPRS / 3G .. but then i cannot get any sites to load up .. could it be a configuration issue? Like when your computer is connected on-line but some internet settings are not correct?

Using wi-fi at home it works fine.

Edit: Just changed it to cmnet and it also is working now.

It is very easy actually. But first, make sure you have China Mobile enable your service to get the 20 RMB per month package which give you plenty of data usage. Otherwise you have to pay by the kb, and it adds to be much more (but still cheaper than in the US).

For internet - China Mobile GPRS settings:
Go to settings / connections / GPRS (depends on phone, but GPRS is the setting you want).
If necessary, add a new connection.

Connects to: The internet
Access point (or APN): cmnet
User name: leave blank
Password: leave blank
* leave all else blank.

For MMS:
MMSC URL: http://mmsc.monternet.com
then use your GPRS for CM

If only using WAP, then
Address: 10.0.0.172
APN: cmwap

Post subject: Re: China Mobile(Monternet) WAP, MMS and SMTP/POP settings

HI,can you help me on how can i find the english translation to register my phone on MMS.I have my LG KU990 but i cannot go through

I know there are posts here and there about MMS settings but having just gone through setting up my phone, I thought I'd post the official website for it so people can refer to it in one place if needed. All the linked sites are in chinese only but with Google or Altavista you can sort of make sense of it.

WAP
The WAP information page is :
http://www.monternet.com/moneditor/cs/wap/wapguide/
The settings you need are:
Wap Home : http://wap.monternet.com
Gateway IP : 10.0.0.172
Port: 9201

if you have GPRS:
GPRS APN : cmwap
No Username/Password needed

if not then the
CSD number is: 17266
username: wap
password: wap
Type: Modem (or simulated)

MMS
MMS setup is found here:
http://www.monternet.com/moneditor/cs/help/mms/

APN: cmwap
Server Name: http://mmsc.monternet.com
Gateway: 10.0.0.172
(some phones link this info together with the wap setup)

SMTP/POP Mail
The info can be found at
http://mail.monternet.com/
http://mail.monternet.com/free/gb/Help_QA.htm#a15

First thing you've got to do is register on the mail site: http://mail.monternet.com
Its all in chinese but I had GoogleTranslate in another window to translate the options Very Happy
Choose the first plan which is the free one (its the one that says 0RMB/Month (0元/月) The others may be better if you have larger email needs.

Enter your mobile number and you'll get an SMS with a confirmation password.
Enter the confirmation password
Enter your password and a question/answer in case you loose your password.
again it ask you for the plan...

Once that's all set up you need to setup your PDA. The instructions are here.
http://mail.monternet.com/free/gb/Help_QA.htm#a15
I assume you've setup your GPRS, Wap, MMS already so the relevant info for you is

Outgoing SMTP Server: smtp.17288.com Port: 25
Incoming POP3; pop.17288.com Port: 110
Username: Your Mobile Number
Password: Whatever you entered in registration

After that you should be able to send/receive mail from your phone/PDA.
The email address is YourNumber@17288.com eg 137xxxxxxx@17288.com
Is the iPhone 3g capable of receiving and sending mms? I already inputed the "cmnet" to the APN and username, and I can browse websites (GPRS), but I can't seem to receive mms picture messages.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

The iPhone simply don't have 3G from Apple.

However my grey market P990i also have problem with MMS even with all the settings correct. I've heard its a lock on grey market phones.

@Grisham, yes.

You need to install SwirlyMMS, you'll also need a jailbroken phone in order to download it from Cydia or Installer.

Post subject: CHINA UNICOM GSM GRPS SETTINGS APN: UNINET

If your using china unicom's gsm sim card the following works for internet access.

apn: uninet

THATS IT. if you call them and ask them they will only tell you to use
"uniwap" thats useless for gprs/edge internet. oh and subscribe to the grps20
gives u 100mb data for 20 rmb a month more or less depending on what u need. overall it works ok.

AGAIN APN: uninet

works for me.

Hi,
I have a HTC Hero with a China Mobile sim card and for some reason the settings given by victorinchina didnt work for me...
I finally managed to make everything alright so I figured I'd post my settings in case anyone is in the same situation.
First, I have to say that I couldnt get internet to work with cmwap as APN. It only works with cmnet. As a consequence, I had to set up 2 APN:
(settings to do in "settings"->"wireless controls"->"mobile network settings" -> "access point names". Then menu button-> "new APN")

1.
Name: cmnet (internet)
APN: cmnet
Proxy: <not_set>
Port: <not>
Username: <not_set>
Password: <not_set>
Server: <not_set>
MMSC: <not_set>
MMS proxy: <not_set>
MMS port: <not_set>
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 460
MNC: 00
APN type: default
(Save with menu button-> "save")

2.
Name: cmwap (mms)
APN: cmwap
Proxy: <not_set>
Port: <not_set>
Username: <not_set>
Password: <not_set>
Server: <not_set>
MMSC: http://mmsc.monternet.com
MMS proxy: 10.0.0.172
MMS port: <not_set>
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 460
MNC: 00
APN type: mms
(Save with menu button-> "save")

Now 2 APN should appear in the list of APN, make sure that the box in front of "cmnet (internet) is checked.

To finish with, I suppose that the best thing to do is to subscribe to one of these packages that China Mobile offers:
compsolutions wrote:
sms "BLGPRS" to 10086, you'll receive an sms with a list of choices
sms "GPRSxx" where xx corresponds to the fee the per month service you want to subscribe to, they should respond with a confirmation sms.

Alternately, call 10086 and ask for GPRS to be setup on your number. They'll send you an SMS, you'll read the password out to them, and they'll set it up for you.
