Why is that little spot on the South China Sea RED? First time I have ever learned that someone is taking our Hainan Province as one of the countries with U.S. military bases and troops.
Hilarious. Incorrect knowledge acquisition! |

Firstly: Greetings all. Fresh meat here.
I, for one, am thoroughly sick of the election BS. I started like 2 years ago at home.
How we ended up with these two losers is beyond me. I think we should just take a pass this time.
Unfortunately, there is no "None of the Above" box on the ballot.
Personally speaking, I can't remember the last time I voted "for" someone. It's always a vote against the worse of the two.
As for the rest, sure the US does stupid **** all the time.
People do teh stoopid.
Governments are made from people.
Ergo; governments are purveyors of stupidity.
Our system of government is the worst on the planet, except all the other ones.

Which Americans do these terms bother?
I've always used the terms "yanks/yankees" because I am from the south and that is how people from the yankee states are referred.
"Mate" isn't really my cup of tea, unless used with regard to sailing. But I certainly couldn't care less if others use it in another way.
"The States".. what on earth can you find wrong with this?
Dude, you seriously must be the uber-tart from the US on this site. |

Great first post. Or not...
Regarding "none of the above"... hello? Ever heard of the write-in? Put Daffy Duck if you want, just vote. |

I thought about that as I typed that comment. Write-ins are wasted votes IMO.
I'm not into futile gestures.
I was thinking more like a box that says," I reject both of these wankers, I want a Do Over."
Third parties/Write in candidates will never compete with the 2 party money machines that are American Politics.
BO makes my skin crawl, and McPain is a dick.
I am a life long Conservative/Libertarian growing more disappointed and disillusioned by the day.
As I stated before, I won't vote for McCain, I will vote against BO.
McCain/Feingold, the judicial nominations, illegal aliens, global warming, etc. all doomed him in my estimation as to his qualifications for my vote.
Not only will I hold my nose, but I shall also likely be drunk when I pull the lever for "R".

Would be nice... but at least Hillary isn't (currently) on the ballot.

What I'm talking about with regard to "mate" and "yanks" is that UK people, other Europeans, and Australians sometimes use those terms purposefully to denigrate or annoy Americans, yet it means very little to us and does not accomplish the intended effect.
An analogy is when Flunder his parents' blunder keeps calling me "coolie." We almost never use that term in the US. I even had to do a Google search to figure out the meaning. There are many other words that Americans use to diss Asians but "coolie" is almost never used.
Firstly reversed (i.e., Lastly), YOU are the tart. |
I agree with Magnolia- I am also a 'yank' and get called one all the time. And 'mate' is never used to 'denigrate or annoy Americans'... it actually is used the same way as 'buddy', 'pal', or 'friend'. And if I myself use the term 'The States' to reference the U.S, and I'm in fact American... am I also a tart?
potentiated... I think you need to choose your words more carefully when you are on a public forum speaking on behalf of all Americans, most of whom on this site think you are an arrogant toothprick. Cheers, mate. |

Yes... we all did understand your original intentions. Unfortunately you have simply demonstrated further why Americans are utterly despised the world over. Good Job!
You can't really think that there aren't just as many derrogative terms used by Americans about people from other countries, with different viewpoints, etc... Oh, wait... you very well may think that.
Thicken your skin...
(ps... regarding 'coolie'... are you kidding me? guess you don't read too much or are 15 years old) |

I merely turned the viewing lens around.
Isn't it interesting how somehow the viewing lens is being used from only one side- to negatively judge Americans and the comments of Americans on this forum while comments focused on Europeans are immediately dismissed? Even some Americans feel guilty.
I would call that being inconsistent, contradictory, and hypocritical. A couple of other Americans noted this earlier in this thread. Maybe someone should change the thread title to "From a viewpoint that is against Americans."
There is nothing in my posts here indicating arrogance. There is however a penchant in you to perceive that in me, I've noticed. When the prefrontal cortex turns inward, as in your case- after all the brain is designed to be egocentric- it tends to react negatively to what it is itself. Thus a type-A male tends to react negatively specifically to another male perceived to be type-A but not to a female perceived to be type-A, for example.
You don't need to apologize to others or non-Americans for me. |
the reason the lens is turned around is because of americans running around the world proclaiming that america is the best place on the planet... you just seem to take things too personally as an american. when outside of the states; firstly it takes yanks a certain amount of individually earned creedence to demonstrate cohesion with all the other dudes of the world. come on mate! fair dinkum. |

I also noticed that you misspelled "derogative," unless your UK dictionary has it spelled with two R's. I hope you can take this as graciously as Americans take all the anti-American bashing on this forum when I tell you that we Americans use the word "derogatory" rather than "derogative." and I hope that is ok with you. |
luv, i am notorious (not like bougie though ) for spelling errors.
HAHAHAHAH! my UK dictionary... too funny!
a wee hint... learn your audience before attempting wit or irony... |

What I see from inside the US is that Americans dream about vacation trips to the UK, other parts of Europe (but not Iceland), and Australia. Once they get there, they're besieged with anti-American sentiment. Then they react. Just like everyone else.
|
(had to break the box-in-a-box-in-a-box thing)
did it ever occur to you that they reason said americans are met with such sentiment is because many whine, complain and always make comparions to america while there? if everywhere were like home, why leave? |

My parents used to holiday overseas every year....and they too seemed to complain about how not everything was like "at home".
As much as they searched they could never find the same food and culture in Hawaii.
Bothered them to no end.... |

When I was in college, I made friends with a ton of students from abroad studying English at my college. The Brazilians constantly talked about their black beans. The Argentinians talked about their hatred of Brazilians. The English and French guys loved to show off their accents hitting on American girls. The Japanese students smoked out and didn't give a rat's ass what anyone thought. And we American students liked them all and took them everywhere, e.g., Tijuana where they all wanted to see the mythical Donkey bar.
And let me add that at the Coffee Bean and lunch afterward in Cloud Nine Mall, Ed, Nathan, Mike, and I (all Americans) constantly cracked jokes about how stupid W. Bush is. This is an important point. Americans are equally quick and judicious with self-effacing humor, which is something I've almost never seen in people from other countries, who are sooooo serious about anything to do with their countries.
People from all over the world are proud of their countries. |
i'm sorry, but will you please clarify the relevance of this post to the overall thread? your initial premise was that others attack americans [and americans don't do the same... (ironic on may levels)] but that seems to have changed.
nice edit, btw...
people from other countries aren't able to take the piss from themselves? ha! surely you must be joking. or confirming the lack of american sense of humor... |

It's not just when you travel though.
I was in Tuscon going through a cave. Old couple in front of me, didn't know i was Aussie, turns to me and says "you know what, i went in a cave in Orstaya and that was good, but this one is huge. our caves are great".
Serious, i think word for word, that is what he said to me.
My reply "yeah mate, our caves are crap compared to yours" |

It ain't just when (they) are out of the country.
My sister and I took our aunt and uncle ( yanks from Connecticut) to a pueblo in New Mexico ( That's a state, for all you ignert furriners).
It was raining and they started up bitching, "Where's all the Indins?", they wanted to know.
"Well", says I, " It's raining and they don't want to get wet, maybe."
"We came all this way, we want to see Indins, dammit!"
I guess they were just Ugly Yankees.
We had a saying down inTexas about that:
Yankees are like hemorrhiods.
Not too bad when they come down and then go away.
It's when they drop down and stay that they become a real pain in the a$$. |
