Post subject: Reliable local movers?

We r planning to move to another apt and would like some recommendations of good and reliable local movers. What would be the average cost of moving? Heard a lot of unpleasant stories abt missing things while moving... please advice. Question

One thing a lot of people do is pack their belongings then book a van taxi and three of four men to carry all of the things between the apartment and the taxi. I probably would not trust this if moving furniture or fragile items. But for the typical apartment, clothes, household necissities, etc, it seems to work pretty well. Number all your boxes and have a friend record which boxes go into the van and then which come out. If you have a large home or a large family, the taxi method may not work for you.

I have only moved once here and it was within the same building, but was one of the easiest things ever done. The building sent up four or five men who just moved everything, as it was... I hadn't planned on moving that day so nothing was packed. Everything arrived and while I did have a giant mess, there was no unpacking.

I know that there are movers listed in the back of That's Shanghai and other publications, but they may be targeting international moves. However, have a look there if you don't get the name of a reliable moving company. I know that there are several in Shanghai... I just don't know the names or contact info. I would probably prefer to do the packing myself, should the pack and move option be available.

Hi Magnolia,

Thanks for the advice. I agree that it's best to do your own packing and unpacking. However, I have 2 young kids, so it will be difficult to move all the things in a taxi. Guess I will have to continue sourcing ard to get different quotations for the moving....

The van taxi is as it sounds, a large van. When i moved i booked one of these and then grabbed a guy off the street to do the heavy work.

Even with two young kids it could still be an option.

I will be moving soon with a local mover, some referral through friends. The price is average, I think. But I think the quality will be somewhat guaranteed. What i heard is that you might get a low quote, but during moving, they would ask for increase in order to get something done, and usu. since you are stuck with them, it's hard to get away without increasing the price tag.

Maybe my experience will be useful to you. I moved from Shanghai to Beijing, so contacted several companies. I know that they also do moving within a city. I did almost all of the packing myself but they came fully equiped with cartons and materials to wrap with fragile things, so everything that was not packed they packed very professionally and quickly.
I attach the companies and info how to get in touch with them, they have offices in Shanghai and Beijing. We used Doda and they said that just moving in Beijing would cost 40 USD, but check that. As for Doda for our case they offered the best price and everything was included (for example no need to pay for wharehouse untill we found an appartment, we actually found before packs arrived Smile ) Plus really professional, nothing bad to say.

Good luck!

we used a local moving company called bridge relocations. www.bridgerelo.com
They were quite good and cheap, 2500RMB for the entire apartment, including furniture, within Shanghai.
They have some English speaking staff for the quote.

I've moved 3x within Shanghai using relocation companies. My favorite by far is Santa Fe Relocations (www.santaferelo.com). They're at the top of the market in terms of cost, but they were quite professional and easy to deal with. They provide the packing and unpacking service (as do the other companies in that price range), which should save a lot of hassle.

If you do use a company that packs and unpacks for you, I think it's important to find out first what the crew size will be. You don't want too many people because then it becomes chaotic and hard to supervise. I would recommend no more than 3 packers plus the crew chief (unless you have a very large place).

What distinguished Santa Fe was the degree of care they used. They lined the walls in both apartments with cardboard so they wouldn't scuff anything. They also had proper packing materials, i.e., mattress bags, sofa bags, boxes for pictures / mirrors, etc. Some of the high end companies don't show up with those materials, which is really irritating.

I have paid 350rmb for about 25 boxes + some furniture i.e. baby bed, exercise machines (02) the company sent me 03 workers and they put the boxes inside the track and went to my new place. Of course i did all the packing myself (bought packing material from taobao website, i am not chinese but it is not difficult to figure out either).
I call first Dazhong track but they were so busy on my move day so i ended up calling another one

hi claragoh, I recommend this company in shanghai, although they are not a moving company, but provide all the packing material you need in moving, including the storage box, archive box, plastic box and sover cover and so on, furthermore they are very cheap. Go see their website to learn more, www.eboxroom.com They also have delivery service.

Why you didn't say it is your company instead? read her profile.

Dazhong, yes, I didn't contact with them, but it's not the first time that poeple notice it when coming across moving, maybe it's really reliable and deserves a try. Smile
