Post subject: "Fresh Beer", Chai Tea, and making money on intere

This is a three part post. I save them up until I have so many unanswered questions that I'm bound to answer at least one with the help of you all.

"Fresh Beer" - I was an a restaurant near Kanding Lu and Xikang lu last week called something crazy like, "The Macao Portuguese and Philippine Restaurant" and they had "fresh beer" on the menu. I take it this is supposed to be like the beer you can find in street stalls of Vietnam and other places. It was FANTASTIC and only 20 kuai! They even had a "white" and a "dark" or some such stuff. The food was ok, but I'd really like to know if anyone has seen such beer in other restaurants in town. Preferably way out here in the Hongqiao. I would walk home drunk every night and it would be fantastic.

Chai Tea - There have been a few posts on this a year or so ago, but none that meet my satisfaction. I love chai tea. addicted. Not the fake coffee shop kind with about a pound of sugar syrup per cup, but spices mixed in with straight black tea so I can add my own melamine. And my supply is running low. An Indian store for some powdered mix might be the best bet, but I have never seen one. Any locations known? (And no I don't want to make my own using fresh ingredients. I'm too lazy for that and don't feel like chopping up ginger every day or going on a 2 week hunt for cardamom. And no I'm not going home any time soon, so bringing some back is out. I don't mean to be a jerk, just trying to narrow it down here)

Money! - I get paid a meager salary, but I'm doing alright. Saving as much as I can when I'm not making boat payments for the local dentist. But the no-name bank my employer requires me to use has no interest for savings accounts. I don't know, maybe this is common. Does anyone know a good low risk way to sock away a few grand for a year or two with interest? Chinese savings bonds or the like?

I have little to offer in return for your information but some really good paper airplane designs, a free rusting Chinese style bike, and the name of a pretty good dentist office.

Andrew

Thanks, 7020. It looked like it was out of a tap. I have no idea if they were making it on sight, but I think they were. I only had the white fresh beer, and it was light, slightly fruity, and delicious. You should report back on the dark, or black fresh beer too!

Homebrew! Another thing I've been wondering about! Do you know of any equipment or ingredient locations?

Most Chinese banks offer time deposits with interest. In other words, you have to agree to tie your money up for a while. The government sets the interest rate for such savings accounts & it's definitely not high (not sure where it currently is, but probably around 3% or so).

For RMB, the investments available aren't many - stocks, real estate, and savings accounts. I'm not sure about how much of a RMB corporate or government bond market exists.

For the beer, they are probably buying from the Bund Brewery, or even Hofbrauhaus (formerly Castle Oktober). Seriously doubt they are making it themselves, and i've not seen the young beer here that you get in Qingdao.

Thanks LoveBox!

About the beer, if it was Bund Brewery beer you'd think they'd advertise it as such. They might not be brewing it on site, but I'm sure it's something a little less spectacular.

No one's got a Indian store location?

If it's from HofBrauhaus then they're massively undercutting the main bar- that place is expen$ive.

Bund Brewery make good beer I reckon, and will check out this Macau place too, just at the bottom of our road I think Mat.

For Indian ingredients:
"Bhoomi Store, 1230 Hong qiao road, by song yuan road. Phone : 51186847.
Indian Kitchen spices centre, no shop, only delivery, Phone : 65865463.
Pines at xian xia road ( and other locations) has some indian groceries as well."

There is a Pines market at the corner of Anfu and Wukang Lu.

Yeah, it's Xikang Lu, between Wuding and Kanding Lu.

I went to go in there once, and was looking forward to Portugese food. The site of hamburgers, spaghetti bolognese and other famous Portugese items put me off and i walked out.
