Post subject: Terms of Service

Attention: New Terms of Service as of November, 2004 are posted on this site at: http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/Article174.phtml

The old Terms of Service:
This is set of guidelines we use to manage this forum. This forum encourages debate, discussion, and a free flow of ideas. We do all we can to allow a range of opinions and viewpoints. However, we do not confuse the free flow of debates with the unrestricted right to say anything about anybody. This forum does not support things which encourage racism, hate, illegal activity, or harassment. Below is list of activities which are against the guidelines of this forum.

This forum will not tolerate:
* Personal attacks of one member by another
* Posting which encourages racism or racist stereotyping
* Posts which encourage illegal activity
* Posts which are blantantly offensive or pornographic
* Post which include links to racist or pornographic web sites
* Flame wars and name calling
* Harrassment by forum post or private message on this site
* Use of similar screen names to parody the identity of real people in a derogatory or defametory manner
* Spamming of the board (posting the same topic in mutiple forums)
* Any posting which could bring harm or damage to shanghaiexpat.com

This list may grow and change according to the activity in the forum. Basically, we monitor any activity that could get this site in trouble or any activity that elicits negative reaction by a significant number of members. We follow and review any post reported to be out of bounbd with our terms of service. Forum moderators can limit, move, or remove any offending post without notice.

We moderate to protect the integrity and the viability of this community. Everytime someone starts a war on the board, we see it as the number of people cancel their account shoots up and pms requesting moderation appear in our box. If we did not moderate, a lot of good people who come here and make this community what it is would not stay.[/url]

So what happens if someone breaks the rules.

Post will be deleted or moved to the PIT.
If it contnues. the offending member will be notified.
In more serious cases of harassment or blatant breakage of the terms of service, their account would be deleted.

A certain level of name calling and expression of opinions relating to these issues (ie generalizations vs racial stereotypes) will be given some leeway, but if it becomes apparent that the intentions are negative or creates otehrproblems, the posts can be deleted or the threads locked, or transferred to THE PIT.

May I ask: are any of the moderators Expats? Are all the moderators Chinese who understand English.

Also it seems that people ARE allowed to talk about disgusting subjects, yet some posts are deemed racist or disgusting. Some of the things discussed are more offensive than the deleted post.

Last time I looked this sight was called Shanghaiexpat. I think it would eb near impossible for a post to offend an actual "EXPAT", considereing what they see and experience in China every day!

So, lastly. Is this site for "EXPATS" or not?

Actually, all the expats are indeed expats. Many posts are given alot of lattitude, but if we are missing something, please continue to play a contructive role and help us identify them. Thanks.

The site is indeed for Expats but part of that experience is having to interact with locals and the various international expats. Same goes on the site.

What about when posts refer to things that are incredibly offensive, but are considered acceptable (read: legal) under the laws of the Peoples Republic of China?

Quote:
but if it becomes apparent that the intentions are negative

When something is legal, but it might be considered offensive, are we not permitted to draw attention to it?

Please clarify...

Side question: In recent months, a great many posts have been either moved to the pit, or deleted outright, many of which have not violated any of the Terms Of Service. Why?

somebody please go look at this assshole's post in the pit (the one about the babies) and delete it....really disgusting...people like him have no place on this site or any site for that matter...there is no defense for stupidity like that...and there is ample proof now that his intentions are less than honorable...
