| Post subject: Physical Exam For Ayi.... |
Hi everyone.
I have a new ayi starting for me on Monday and I want to be sure she is healthy and doesn't have any communicable diseases before she comes into every day contact with my family. I realize that sounds paranoid...but she's from Anhui and well....you know.....
Does anyone know if any of the local or expat hospitals offer a physical exam package? I would honestly prefer she go to an expat hospital to have this done, so I can get a report in English, but I'm guessing I would have to pay cash outright for her...not sure if it would cost an arm and a leg or not???
I'm confused...
what is the Chinese healthcare system like? Is there socialized medicine? Do they pay based on income? Can anyone shed some light? |

Universal free healthcare in China died.
In a local hospital a comprehensive medical exam might be about 900 RMB. In an expat hospital at least double. |

Since we're on the topic of being paranoid, mind as well buy your newly hired ayi an insurance coverage in case of a work related injury. THAT will cost you an arm and a leg. |

^ Actually, you are legally required to pay the taxes and social insurance plans for your aiyi. |

Yes. Not only required to pay for social insurance, but also taxes and all other benefits that any Chinese employee of any company is entitled to. |

^ Of course nobody does this.
Most aiyis would rather not have to pay taxes or the employee part of the contribution for social insurances deducted from their pay anyhow.
The problem is when the aiyi gets injured or ill and / or pissed at the employer and goes to the labor bureau. |

Wait till your aiyis falls over in your flat and breaks her arm, then you find how serous the situation is. Our Compound Management sorts out the insurace for us, it cost around 40rmb. |

^ Do they also sort out the income tax, housing fund and retirement fund you must also pay for the aiyi? |

I'm just getting sick and tired of the colonial asshole attitude I see in so many foreigners. 83% of them are drooling retards who can't cut the mustard at home so they come to China, where they can act like Superior Beings. Look at this attitude ; "oh, she might have a disease ! I want her thoroughly checked at a hospital !" But pay for it ? Pay for the normal things a human being expects as a job benefit ? Snivel and moan about "human rights" but act like Vlad the Impaler in real life ? Fuck these asshats. |

Now I understand and agree with you.
However I don't think it's 83%. Probably more like 95%. |

now you have to be kidding....
I have a two year old child and I'm pregnant with my second. Since moving to Shanghai I have been exposed to 5th's disease twice and my daughter had a very serious case of hand, foot, mouth disease...remember the disease that killed over twenty children in anhui last spring. So excuse me for wanting to make sure that someone working in my home, exposing themselves to our food, our bathrooms, our children...excuse me for wanting to make sure they are healthy. Isn't that true for most employers...don't they generally require a physical examination before they hire you? Every job I've ever had has done so...like if you work in a hospital they check you for TB immediately...it's common sense not colonial a-hole-ism!
I never once said that I wasn't willing to pay for this exam for the ayi...that never came out of my mouth. I simply inquired if it would be terribly expensive and what the protocol is, since I've lived in Shanghai for over a year and know hundreds of families with ayis and I've never ONCE heard of anyone paying for their taxes, health insurance, or anything of the sort.
I certainly don't consider myself a superior being at all. The only reason I even have an ayi is to establish a long standing relationship with someone I can trust so I can occasionally take a shower or have a night out with my husband once in a blue moon and trust that my child is being looked after! In the states I could depend on friends or family. Here I don't have that luxury....
so F YOU and all your self righteous glory! |

To some you do come off as a cheap, condescending bitch.
How does the aiyi know whether you have fleas or an STD? As you can see, your analogy of a company which requires medical exams for all employees is flawed.
You finding it surprising that an employer has the duty to pay income taxes, FICA and medical insurance for your employee speaks poorly of your upbringing ... or do all in your trailer park have the same moronic mentality?
Colonial assholism seems appropriate. |

the ayi should know along with all of her fellow countrymen that us foreigners have to go through a rigorous phsyical exam when we enter the country...remember that? I certainly remember being tested for std's among many, many other things and got the all clear...otherwise they probably would have sent me away!
I don't find it surprising that those things are required by law...
what I find surprising is that I've lived here almost a year and a half and this is the first that I've heard of it. I've got no issue paying any of this stuff...and I pay my ayi a very fair wage. Money is not the issue and I'm not being cheap...I'm simply asking what to expect, as this is the first I've heard of it. |

Can't we all just get along ?
Maybe do a group gang-bang and flush all this negativity right out of our lives ? Since we're all clean, that is.
Geesh, you guys need to lighten up - hate mongering starts after the new year... doh. |

The concept of needing to get your ayi checked for mutual benefit is commendable, but the initial post could be interpreted poorly if one were to read it a certain way. Anyhow, get the ayi checked and realise that we have some liability for anyone "working" at our homes. |

The labor contract law does not apply to a part-time worker. If she's not full-time, then you don't have to worry about the benefits, etc.
Also, women who are legally retired (40 is the retirement age in Shanghai for women) are not entitled to social benefits, even if working full-time. I'm not sure whether that retirement age is the national age, and whether any woman who attains 40 is automatically considered retired. If you're curious, call the Labor Bureau. |

Yes, but we get a very thorough annual health check for a visa, Blood work, ultrasound with most clothes off and everything - you know the drill. No Fleas or other evident parasites detected.
Mrs. Zak (Chinese) also gets the annual pants down check for her job, then gets the same rote gig examinations as a Laowai and she's NOT in the health care industry.
If I had an Ayi looking after my child and working in-home, full-time I'd want to make damn sure she didn't have any "health issues".
We're not in a Politically Correct environment where we can be considerate and respectful of domestic staff with "health anomalies".
Not an attack on yu888. I have a lot of respect for you.
Pay for her health check and evaluate the results accordingly.
Oh, and if you do hire her, take the advice from the other posters.

Bullshit.
Taxation appplies to full time as well as part time. In addition, part time is not determined exclusively by the number of hours worked. Unless you have a signed labor contract stating you are hired part time, it is fairly easy to claim you were working full time and the labor bureau will likely find in your favor.
40 is most definitely not the legal retirement age for females in Shanghai. Are you brain dead? |

Bullshit.
First of all, the medical exams required for employment are far from comprehensive. There are a myriad of communicable diseases you could have that would not be detected. The blood work, for example, only detects STDs. Are you going to tell us that the only form of communicable diseases to worry about are STDs?
Or that you couldn't have come town with a case of, say, TB in the year you've been here?
The potential aiyi also, at one point in her life, had a medical examination and obtained a clean bill of health.
Does it hurt when you think? |
