Post subject: Do I need a passport?

For once and for all, if I am traveling from the US to St. Lucia for my honeymoon, do I need a passport or not? I have heard conflicting stories. Some say you have to have a passport, some say a certified birth certificate, photo ID, and a return ticket is sufficient. Which is it?

This seems like the perfect question to ask people living in Shanghai, China.

If you are an US Citizen you don't need visa BUT you DO need to have a valid passport. If you are not an US citizen you may or not need a visa. See the link below for list of countries required to have tourist visa.

US citizens need a passport now when ever and how ever you enter/exit the USA, even Mexico, no more just walking across the border.

You need a passport when you travelling international. If you an US citizen, you can travel with your US driver license. If you are not US citizen, You need your passport with US visa for travelling inside US.

Some airports/airlines require 2 forms of photo ID.
Having a passport for domestic US travel will soon become commonplace.

Would a letter from my mother stating my identity suffice?

Seeing as how it is a goverment issued I.D. you can actually travel with just a U.S. drivers licence within the U.S. regardless of your nationality. Green card holders and most illigal's have a drivers license and can travel on a domestic flight with that as an I.D. Other forms are accepted as well if you do not have a drivers license. Green card for example.

Go international and yes, a P.P. is required regardless of nationality. May even be true for Guam and USVI now also (not sure on this, I have a P.P. so don't care either).

Also depending on your nationality you may not even need (hence have) a U.S. visa, so U.S. visa may not be necessary to travel abroad with foreign P.P. as well.

Has anyone recently walked out of the U.S. ( Mexico / Canada ) do they check any I.D. when you leave the U.S. on foot? They did not many years ago when I went to Mexico just curious about now.

We went to Canada (Niagra) last year and they thoroughly checked our USA passports (I was alone with my 2 children, thus extra scrutiny). We then had to sit thru a lecture from the border control a-hole on how much better Canada was than the US. Upon crossing the border, I let loose with a real good one...positively spoiled their pristine freakin air...priceless!

For St. Lucia you definitely need a passport.
But a bit of a strange question for this forum. www.eastcaribbeanexpat.com would be more appropriate. Wink

That's because their program is capable of handling more than two neurons, and does not have the auto-randomize function. Unlike multi-personality Nutella.

North of St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Eastern Caribbean. I used to live there for a short time.

Let's see...the percentage of Americans actually holding a Passport is somewhere south of 30%...Probably closer to 20%.

Completely incorrect...

Do you just make this stuff up?

My guess is now that you need a Passport to re-enter USA from anywhere, more people will have them.......

New York State is now offering a New Driver License that they say you can use instead of a Passport...Don't know how it works...

Anyone in the western hemisphere can correctly call them-self an American. We really should identify Statesiders as such.

Agree. And if you see, the asker is a newbie. Better being a newbie in St. Lucia / US travel forum and then ask this question than putting this in Shanghai forum

Me too.

But we all know the answer for sure here in China.

All that is needed is to be able to recite all 50 states in alphabetical order if asked to prove US citizenship.

Every American can do that. Smile
