| Post subject: Buying a good violin in Shanghai |
Will be in Shanghai in a few days. Looking for quality violin. Anyone knows where to get one? Suggestions of reputable, famous shops would be most welcomed. And some idea of the price range that they sell.
Looking at a 1/2 size violin for my nephew. Something like RMB 3000 . Tips on choosing and selecting will be helpful too. oh yeah, infor on shipping/ courier too. Thanks!! |

some time ago i went there (streets around music conservatory) because i was wondering whether i get a violin there cheaper than in europe. actually, same quality is same as in europe. but for 3000RMB you should get a 1/2 violin (not great quality) - but you would also get that elsewhere. strings are much cheaper (at least compared to europe), depending on the quality and brand its 1/3-1/4 of the price. |

There are a few (I think 2) small string shops on Fenyang Lu, south of the Fuxing Lu intersection on the west side of the street. The one further south is the good one. Make sure you specify a handmade one. Those are generally better quality.
There are about five music stores at the 8th floor of Cloud Nine mall where you can get a handmade 1/2 size starting at around RMB 3K. |

We bought a 3/4 for 3000 rmb, from a small shop in the Xuhui District. The address is 86 Fenyang Lu. The guy's name is hai feng qian. The violin is made in his own factory in Beijing, according to him, with dried cherry (I believe) wood, hard wood pegs.
We just walked in and just started to talk to him and he seems genuine and sincere. There are a few shops in that area, with a recommended bigger shop around the corner, we didn't buy it there but they had quite a few 1/2 and 3/4 and full sizes available. |
