Someone brought one to the office found in a park once where we assume it had been dumped. It was pretty sick and we tried to bring it back - but it just got worse. Ended up having to have it put to sleep ( humanely ). Doc gave us some warnings that there are a lot of cases of rabies with stray animals going around ( did not say this one had it) .

Another reason for that might be there seems to be a cottage industry of picking up cats off the street to pack away to some restaurant supplier in guandong. There are a few activists who confront the people who collect these cats just as they are getting ready to hit the road with a truckful -and it has made news a few times.

Theres a ton of stray cats here, they just don't hang out where most expats do, bright lights and busy streets. We took one in last spring but he left one day and didn't come back. In the apartment complex across the street, where my in-laws live, they have 6 I have seen, sure there are more I haven't. You can find them at the zoo, People's Square, and in the alleys away from the main streets.
Threre is an animal shelter here, not sure if they shelter cats to but I guess they would. Pets are kind of new here, outside of birgs, bugs, and fish that is.
