Post subject: Consultants and financial advisors

8 'o clock in the morning. I do work late nights mostly, because customers in the US are sleeping when it's daytime in China.
Phone is ringing and some stupid woman with Phillipino accent asking me about my financial plans. What the ****.
12 noon, already in office my gf's phone rings. A british expat is on the phone requesting me. "Helloe, did you think about how to organize your retirement lately?" I told him I am not interested in retiring. And when I feel it's over I know how to shoot myself. But the guy kept talking.
I told the guy, you're disturbing my privacy. But no reaction. I guess he had to finish his just trained monologue. But he understood, **** you. and then he hung up.

I mean we have problems in Shanghai with cockroaches. But there are Raid or Mothballs doing a good job to keep them away. But what to do with those consultants?

I once had one of them coming to my office. He was in a very motivated mood. Haha, until I told him I only make 800 RMB a month.

But this will not stop others from calling me.

Who is giving them my info?

I'm already not taking part in any expat activities.

Existing clients who know you. That's how they operate. They ask clients to give names of friends.

I never gave anybody my info. I don't even live where expats live. I don't go to expat activities and I'm just registered in 2 forums.

when they call me, I always ask who gave them my name and of course they say they 'don't know'...so I tell them when they do know to call me back to tell me and then we can talk.

Which of course they never do. I ask them how am I suppose to trust them with my finances if they don't even know how they got my name.

Last time I got a call I also asked how they got my name, the lady (must be Indian) said we got it from THE database of companies registered in China. I said there is no such database, to which she couldn't reply.

yeah, it the mysterious DATABASE... hear that too... howver, they can't tell you how you ended up in this database either.

i think "the database" is actually a vortex to a totally different dimension. a dimension where roaches and other pests know how to operate the phone - and then they call through the vortex.

i have no prove of this theory as of yet but i have conclusive evidence. once i have it watertight, i shall publish in this forum first.

A get a few calls from time to time. I pity these guys, this job must not be easy.
I am really wondering how people could be convinced by someone on the phone...

I once met a guy who was sales man for morris something in Shanghai and who told me it would not be decent for him to tell me how much he was making a month. Hard to believe...

Does somebody or some organization sell the names to these places?
Like a list broker...I know that's a business in the US, I wonder if that is going on here too?

I pity them too, it must be a hard job but I have less pity for them when the same ones keep calling again and again.

You can buy lists of expatriates here from China Telecom. That's what most of them do. Chambers of commerce and consulates are another source.

I heard USD500 per sign up, probably lower for smaller companies. But then I don't know if a sign up is someone who agrees to come to a meeting, or someone who actually contracts one of the investment plans they are selling.

for those cold calling guys at companies like Page Financial or Austin Morris, they pay them like RMB3500 "plus commission" (depends on performance)

I got one Brit friend who went for interview at one of these companies and this is what they offer Smile

Are you a director of a company? They get the public lists from Dun & Bradstreet in HK.

That's how the Smile got me.

Well, she was right but just didn't know it. You can buy a CD with a list of every foreign company registered in China.

Had one lying bastard call me the other day, said he was following up on a previous conversation i had with his colleague. I told him in my own way, that this was highly unlikely, as my conversations with his coleagues usually end with me telling them to go fvcck themselves.

^maybe thats why he called you back;)

I found the commission payments strange. So $500usd just to get someone to open an account with that planner? Or just to get someone into their office?

I heard that 3500rmb was the base salary as well. That would suck knowing you will only get 3500rmb a month and maybe/perhaps/doubtfully some more if you really work your ass off.
Thats about 5 hours a week part time teaching (on an average foreigner teachers salary).
Why would you want to be a FP?

Like Andreas said: in China, you can buy ANY information you need

A little off topic, but look what you can buy :
http://www.worldsources.cn/chinaexportdata.html

I have found 2 of my companies there...I also found some original bill of ladings of shipments of the company employing Victorinchina, by just typing 3 letters (the short initials for his company)

Maybe even some of your own employees have been selling your name or contact infos.... wink2

-so tragic when it's true

no one in their right mind would ever sign up for one of these if they really understood how it worked. the insurance companies the advisors sell for know this, and that's why they pay decades of commissions all upfront when a sale is made.
