According to this video Chinese devised a way to eat a fish while it's still alive and prod, poke, and eat it which has been deep-fried but is still living and seemingly conscious.
Sounds good I want to try it!! |
There's a good chance that Drunken Shrimp (醉虾) is still 'alive' when you eat it (although it's probably feeling no pain at that point!) |

| Okay... so they're a bit on the "slop oil" side, but I LOVE the fiery hot Sichuan long beans with minced pork. |
That is one of my favorite dishes. The name is "gan bian dao dou" or in Shanghai usually "gan bian si ji dou". They use different beans in Shanghai most of the time. The problem is here, they make it for local taste. Shanghai people are afraid of spicy food, so you don't get any heat here. Most of the Sichuan food in Shanghai is pure rubbish, but for some reason, the Hunan food here is Excellent. I haven't figured that one out yet.... |

I had that half cooked, half alive fish served up to me in Hubei years ago, on my first trip to China. Cant believe people are making such a meal of it now (no pun intended!). It's been around for ages, and yes, it is truly awful. |
