| Post subject: Can tourists get married in Shanghai? |
Hi,
We are both Austrlians, but due to various circumstances, Shanghai works out to be the most convenient place to get both families together for our wedding. But we will only be there on tourist visa, for 3 weeks or so.
Does anyone know whether tourists can legally get married in Shanghai? Does the Shanghai Marriage office register marriages for tourist?
Thanks a lot! |

And if you could, the ceremony is short and business like, not like the sort of registry office job back home. Mr Happy's answer is correct, but also good news for you...... |

Gees, the toilet roll list of administrative BS just to get married - as foreigners and tourists to boot in SH will astonish you. Don't do it here.
Just do it in Oz, in a park with a registered marriage celebrant. The novelty factor here isn't worth it.
Or, you could fake it ! |

Yeah fake it and sign some dummy papers. And get registered properly in Australia. |

sigh.... well, the problem is that we cant get part of the families to OZ in short notice - and then we are off to UK for a few years, which is even harder to get everyone to... Shanghai is a good middle-ground with most amount of family members already there, and we are already planning 3 weeks there... oh well...
what about Hong Kong or Beijing - that's the other two places we were planning to go... |

You can get married in Hong Kong no problem. I know this because I also wanted to get married in Shanghai on a tourist visa until I found out it was impossible, so I explored the HK option. However, you need to give something like 1 or 2 months notice of intention to get married (you need to fill out a form and send it to the appropriate HK authorities). Google it and you will find all the info. The bonus of getting married in HK vs Shanghai is that you can get the celebrant to come to you whereever you want, unlike Shanghai. |

Do you really have to get officially legally married? As others have suggested why not just have the whole shebang here without the real legal part and do the real paper work when you are back in Oz or the UK? Is there a real difference if you're legally married a few days/weeks after the actual wedding celebrations? |
