Post subject: Do they speak English on CCTV9 ?

Not sure whether they speak English on CCTV9
Some newsreaders, especialy those behind the screens, their pronunciation is hilarious.
And there is a guy, I think his name is James Chau, he has a kind of lip paralysis.

And when I see that Yang Rui I get a vomiting feeling.

I think James Chau is mesmerising. He is so odd, that I can't help but sit and watch him! It is def his big lips and accent that hook me in.
I think we forget that CCTV9 is not really made for foreigners....Because if it were they wouldn't insult our intelligence with the crap they put on there.

I think James Chau has a lisp, no? I haven't seen CCTV9 in so long- I almost forgot about him. he is mesmerizing in a very perverse way.

The irony is that you are incorrect. There is an apostrophe in "its" when it is a contraction of "it is" as in "it's a beautiful day today". But when referring to the possessive case, you are correct.

Just sayin...

CCTV9 is made for foreigners, you can watch it in the UK at least on satellite

But not with "it". When it's is a contraction, it gets an apostrophe. But when its is possessive, not.

You don't read very well, do you ? GaryA and Shangstar got it wrong. "Chinglish at it's [sic] finest" is not a contraction. That is an example of the possessive. GaryA got the rule right but misapplied it, Shangstar missed the rule entirely. Right on ?

i guess reading comprehension isn't your forte. Show me where GaryA (the first to point out the correct grammar) is incorrect.

Let me spell it out for you: "it's" is a contraction of "it is" whereas "its" is the proper form of the possessive case.

In the bold is where he blew it. "It's" [sic] in that sentence is not a contraction. It is a possessive.

If all else fails, call them an English teacher. Well, you fail again because I've never taught English in my life. I do, however, use it every day.

It's is always a contraction of either "It is" or "It has" so if you can replace it with either of those two in the sentence the one you want to use is "It's". If not then what you are looking for is "its", very simple.

Yeah might be getting lost here - cripes!

But an apostrophe can and is used to indicate the possessive, right? e.g

that dog's bone
my sister's boyfriend
it's a dog's life

But I think the form of possessive Leida is referring to is correct, but which is a different type of possessive than the above. e.g.

at its worst
2 miles from its destination

How on earth one explains this to Chinese students I don't know!
