Cheers

1. try taobao to find the prices
2. official iPhone 3G or 3GS = no wlan
3. cracked iPhone with wlan, but you need a 3G unicom card

Yeah it has no wi-fi, and I heard it might not have the iPod function on it? That could be completely way off though!
So many all singing all dancing unlocked ones are smuggled in from Honkers and sold under the counter I reckon that's the best option. |

Confirmed, no wlan on the official iPhone as sold by Unicom here in China. You can either get them with a subscription plan for anywhere from ~150 kuai upwards per month, or just the phone for 5,000 RMB.
Not exactly a tempting deal. |

Gosh the Chinese authorities are so paranoid they will never conquer the world if they carry on like this. Leaving the whole population with just gsm & hello kitty is insane. |

You can't purchase an unlocked Iphone in the US. You can get them in Hong Kong (an an electronics store or on the Apple online store) or in Europe (Italy for sure, perhaps other countries). |

Even your iphone is locked, you can get it unblocked here in Shanghai.
If you like the official iphone from China Unicom (no wifi), you can sign two years contract with different plans choosable and different discount on the phone. (you can refer to http://www.3gsolutions.com.cn/news/html/8.html)
If you don't like two years tie-in, you can just apply a 3G sim card from the their stores with different plans choosable. (you can refer to http://www.3gsolutions.com.cn/news/html/?9.html)
If you wouldn't like to commit yourself to their monthly plan, but still expect to get your iphone connected to internet (no restricted to wifi areas) , you are recommend to buy a China Unicom's 3G SIM data card. |

The problem with the Chinese 3G is that it does not work with the 3G systems outside China, like for example Hong Kong, Korea and Japan. Which makes it pretty useless for people who travel.
And then without WiFi, why would anyone even consider? |

Yes, Chinese 3G is only workable within mainland China (excl. HK, Maocau & Taiwan). It will become useless if you travel abroad. But still useful while travelling within China.
Without wifi on the phone. Unless you use 3G SIM data card on your computer, netbook or smartbook, you can get wifi. |

I bought mine (an 8g) with the 2.2 OS in Wanchai computer centre on Hennessy Road. Shop 140 if I remember right (Sun Computer or Sunny Computer). Guys name is Roy. Paid 4,800 HK (but mind you, old OS, 8g and 6 months ago)
Will go back there end of the month to have him put the new OS on. |

China Unicom uses WCDMA which can be used outside of China. It's pretty common in Asia and Europe. The one that can't be used outside of China is TD-SCDMA which is offered by China Mobile.
Anyways, it doesn't make sense to buy an iPhone from China Unicom when you can get a cheaper unit with wi-fi from the grey market importers. |

From what I have seen it's about 20% cheaper in HK. |
