| Post subject: personal training qualification |
Hi guys, i am just putting the feelers out for interest in people that want a personal training qualification. I have been working for several years teaching certificate 3 and 4 in personal training with the australian institute of fitness issuing the International FISAF certificate recognised in over 30 countries. I am also working with a chinese Personal training school provider running the IPTA.
In conjunction with a US certificate provider we are seeing if there is enough interest in running a one off Personal Training qualification course in english. Whether its part time or fulltime.
Its still in the early stages of planning, but if there are enough people that are interested in learning to be a personal trainer, we can organise a course in the near future.
please let me know if this is something that you would like to attend.
this is something that i really enjoy teaching and look forward to answering all the curly questions and providing a comprehensive course. |

I think its a great idea but there are so many PT courses in China already in english and in chinese. Also people can get certification online easily nowadays so i dont think it would be a big market for this..if i were you i will try to launch out a course online for personal training marketing in china or in asia!
good luck

Online personal trainer certification huh? Wow. That sounds reliable.
I know a lot about which certifications are worth something in the USA (NASM, ACSM, etc...), but as far as international certifications, I'm not sure which ones are reputable and which ones are not. But I'm pretty sure the good ones involve hands on learning as opposed to sitting in front of a computer and giving out your credit card number.
To anyone paying for a personal trainer certification, make sure you are actually learning the skill, and not just buying a piece of paper. The health and safety of your clients depends on that.
Experience has taught me that there is no substitute for hands on training in any field.
It's the same thing with belt rankings in martial arts. A lot of people want to buy a black belt to impress people without doing the work it takes to understand the art. These people always do more harm than good.
Fortunately, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. From what I know of International PT, he's an expert in the fields of body building and strength training with the muscles to show for it. I could be wrong, I have been before, but I'm guessing his program is probably worth a little more in the real world than an internet PT certification. |

I might be interested. I'm not especially interested in becoming a personal trainer per se but I work with 'difficult' teenagers teaching science, and one of the ways I've found I can get through to the boys in particular is by approaching biology/anatomy & physiology studies from a sports and training perspective. I can see it might be beneficial to me to augment my current understanding with some more PT-targeted knowledge. I'd need to know more details though. |

thanks guys for the feedback, and thanks Ramesy for you're accurate opinion of online courses. it is true that there are a lot of online PT courses. I know quite a few providers and have worked with students that have done core modules via correspondence and then enrolled in a fulltime course to finish of the rest.
I was initially surprised, but then became accustomed to a lot, not all, of the these students having a poor grasp of anatomy and physiology. They also did not have the hands on skills of interacting with a client and how to properly screen them and develop the essential customer service skills. A certificate is only worth something if it has added to your knowledge.
When i attained my certificate cert 4 in workplace training and assessment allowing me to write a course, i was surprised to see how many loopholes could be used in order to fast track someone through a course. And then at the end of a lot of these courses there is no pass fail. it is competent or not yet competent. I don't know about you, but i would like to be more than just a competent personal trainer. I would rather be a confident kick ass trainer with great interpersonal skills and a sound grasp on physiology. Plus the ability to take complex theory's and principles and simplify them for the average client.
Again this is just a preliminary survey to establish if there is an interest. I know there are plenty of course providers, so i am just seeing if there are enough people who would like a western approach from someone who has been in the industry for many years, working with clients ranging from the blind and mentally handicapped through to biggest loser contestants.
thanks again for your input and time. its all greatly appreciated.
PS, my website has been unblocked is working again - wohoo! www.internationalpersonaltraining.com |

have to agree with ramsey and international PT. Real hands on experience is the only way to learn about training and proper technique, plus the advantage of having the teacher there to always ask questions. What Shanghai PT talking about represents pretty much 60-70% or more of the trainers in Asia. Most have very limited real hands on skill sets and just out to make a quick buck. No one that is serious about doing personal training would just do a online course. Unless more for just general knowledge. One thing right though it would make a good biz as there's so many people willing to take shortcuts and just want a paper so they can say they're "qualified"
You can do some course online for little as $40usd 50 multiple guess questions 20 minute instant exam and certificate without any prior experience. Would you trust a guy like that to give you an exercise program? If you going to use a trainer, always check their credentials first.. just like other industries the china market is unregulated and lots of shady stuff.. |
