| Post subject: Which room heater to buy ?? |
Its too cold and my home AC-cum-heater is not doing its job as much as i expected. The wall mounted one in the bedroom is just not sufficient. Can anyone suggest me which heater to buy ?
I will be buying it in the evening from the Carree Four at Fangdian Road. I would prefer a sub 100 RMB heater. Please pour in your suggestions. |

My personal choice would be two or three oil filled electric radiators. They're more efficient than fanned heaters and are silent. They're more than your price though (over 200rmb each I think) and they do take time to heat a room. Once they do though they're great. |

Ha, topical. I bought one last night from Carrefour - the Xietu Lu store has quite a selection, I got an oil filled one with 9 'blades' or vents, cost 308 rmb. Left it on all night in the bedroom and whilst it didn't toast the place, it did definitely take the chill off and it was more comfortable getting up in this morning. Will leave it on low 24 x 7, maybe put it on high after 10 pm when the electric is cheap. |

I bought the most basic unit - 800W- at Carrefour (RMB 79) yesterday At half power it kept my bedroom at 19C without any other heat (cant get my wall A/C unit to work at the moment...) At full power it kept the bedroom at 20C. The only slightly bad thing is that it kept my room lit up with this mild orangy sheen. |

Just wondering how much noise it makes? what's the brand?
Thx |

Are you satisfied with the heating effect of this heater that you mentioned. I suppose there is some coil in it right ?? I think i have seen these in carrefour last time i went there but did not bother to have a look as i felt i would not need but its a different scene now.
I think i can go for the one you mentioned and midea is a good brand i suppose. |

I don't like those because it's hard to sleep when there's light coming from it. It isn't as obvious in the store because it's very bright there. Much prefer oil filled electric radiators but this may be above your budget. |

Also i may carry back the heater with me as i will be leaving in about three weeks, so i suppose i would not invest in that radiator one. |

They also don't work as well since they depend on radiation rather than convection. If you put the oil ones on low and just leave them that way they are pretty cheap to run and warm up the air in the entire room, instead of just heating up what's in front of them.

So guys for a bedroom heater, isn't the 79 RMB one with coil one a good option ??
Ruling out the radiator one, what other option if not the basic one ? |

Just to avoid any misunderstanding, the oil filled radiators are a closed circuit. Thus no need to refill oil or anything. I would suggest those as previous posters did. These keep on radiating the heat for a while, even if the thermostat shuts off. |

last winter I bought the small 79RMB (midea I think). The best thing is that is is highly portable, so when I woke up, I put it in the (frozen) bathroom for a while so it is not a torture to take a shower.
I can move it very easily everywhere in the house and it does not take that much space to store in summer.
And I actually like the fact that it heats one specific direction..I have a hard time getting my feet to warm up, so I put it close to the feet of the bed, that would be the warmest part, everything else would be mildly warm which is what I need,
The bad: the light and the fact that one of the bulbs burned in the middle of the night (and eventually the other one too)...not sure if this can be dangerous or not.
This year I bought (yesterday) a Midea 149RMB (3 bulbs and it moves like a fan)...hope the bulbs don't die on me, heat is just perfect!
good luck |

For me it's good enough. It was small enough to put in my backpack back from Carrefour and weighs about 1kg. Got my room up to 20C without any help from the built in A/C heater. Slightly annoying with the dim orangy light on at night but it kind of reminded me of sleeping with the Christmas tree lights on - so slept with very happy Christmas dreams |

^^ Good way to look at it
For economics reason i think this 79 RMB one is a better choice. Will go to carrefour tonight and check out what all they have in store and will buy one.
But still if any one can give low-down on the one i mentioned above (amazon link) it would great. |

oil heaters are better - they radiate more widely and evenly. They keep radiating for a while after you switch of as well, which is good for drying socks and pants. Mine cost 400 RMB from Carrefour last year. Just about light enough to be carried upstairs, and its on wheels. |

I am in love with the oil filled radiators and intrigued by these ones.
How do these work? (please don't say "just switch it on")
Thanks.

I picked one of these up last year. Ohh how happy and warm I was. It has variable settings from 400w-2000w and quickly will have the whole room warm, while the vent is adjustable so it point directly at the feet etc. I also find it does wonders for drying cloths and in summer it as a fan only "cooling" feature. |

This was just what i needed. My wall unit a/c is weak so it just needed a little help. I wouldn't recommend this heater if it will be your only heat source though (unless your bedroom is small and insulated).
Makes zero noise and the slight orange glow is hardly noticeable.

Yup i finally bought that 79 RMB one from carrefour yesterday. As a only source it sucks. But combined with that AC Cum heater it works fine. Mine one swivels also but i kept it in my sleeping direction and it was good.
@wiggle
i saw the one mentioned by you in carrefour. It was for 78 RMB but i did no find it that good so bought another one. |

They are called quartz heaters
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_heater
"Tubular infrared lamps in quartz bulbs produce useful infrared radiation in wavelengths shorter than 5 microns. The enclosed filament operates at around 2500 K, producing more shorter-wavelength radiation than open wire-coil sources. Developed in the 1950's at General Electric, these lamps produce about 100 watts/inch (4 w/mm) and can be combined to radiate 500 watts per square foot (54000 watts/square m). To achieve even higher power densities, halogen lamps were used. Quartz infrared lamps are used in highly-polished reflectors to direct radiation in a uniform and concentrated pattern. Lamps are used in food processing, chemical processing, paint drying, and thawing of frozen materials. Quartz heat lamps can also be used for comfort heating in cold areas, in incubators, and in other applications for heating, drying, and baking. During development of space re-entry vehicles, banks of quartz infrared lamps were used to test heat shield materials at power densities as high as 28 kW/ square foot (300 kw/square meter)."
the trouble with them is that they are strictly radiant heating. They are good for localized heating, like your feet or making a small bathroom warm by heating up the washing machine but they don't heat up the air directly. For a full room, convection is better. For spot heating, radiation is better. Which one you want depends on what you are trying to achieve.
btw, the quartz tube inside the fuser in your laser printer is the same principle as these heaters. It radiates infrared energy to heat up the aluminum fuser roller.
But anything is better than he stupid wall-mounted combo a/c:heater things. Those are practically useless.By design, they don't work when it actually gets cold. They work fine in the summer.
Very Chinese, eh ?

The oil radiator sounds interesting, do these heaters use a lot of electricity? |
