| Post subject: Anyone been to Xinjiang Province ? |
Hi All
In October I shall be in Shanghai visiting friends for 2 weeks, but for the first week 'Golden week' we are hoping to visit another part of China. At the moment we are considering Xinjiang Province in North West of China.
I know its so far from Shanghai, but by chance has anyone visiting this site ever been there???
If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts of the place and any travel tips you have.
Is it worth such a long trip ?? Are there any special visa requirements ??
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!

I went from Beijing by train two years ago. No, there's no special visa requried. What cities will you go? Each cities are quite different. I don't know if there's any direct flight from Shanghai. Xinjiang is such a big region, so I don't think one week will be enough. I think it's beeterconsider some places around Shangai. Anyway, if you do need any specific information, I will try my best. |

Wow really!! We have no specific places in mind yet, just researching what would be the best places to visit if we decided to go there.
I think one place that was mentioned was "The Old Silk road" ??
What places would you recommend ?
This will be my 3rd visit to Shanghai and have previously visited places like Hangzhou, Nanjing and Xiaosing (sorry it its mispelt), so we were thinking of somewhere a 'little' unusual this time.
hmm... Too short a trip. OK! Maybe we will try for a longer holiday?
What was your impression overall, Is it friendly, modern, are the cities and the more rural parts safe for travellers ???
Sorry I haven't a clue what to expect. But if there are no direct flights from Shanghai, good chance we'll pass on the trip anyway. I will ask my friend in Shanghai to enquire about this, best to know how than further down the line.
Thanks! |

I went last october, after the golden week, though. I wrote a bunch about it. You can read it here :
http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/v4bJournal-module-func-journal_view-uid-9 46.html
some answers to your specific questions:
there are direct flights from shanghai.
if you can (this likely *WILL* take longer than one week) go to Kashgar. but there are no direct flights to kashgar, you will have to fly to Urumqi, then train or bus or maybe plane to kashgar. I didn't go to kashgar, and I regret it.
very friendly, less modern, mostly safe, but wear your backpack on your front (quite a few thieves).
Heavenly lake is nice. Stay in a Yurt. you can find one when you get there.
it will be getting very cold at night by this time, but still be hot during the day. pack appropriately.
hope this helps,
jenming |

Yeh, Kashgar is a must. Though it took me 12 hrs from Urumqi to there. There's flight from Urumqi to Kashgar, and if you book at least 14 days in advance, it cost almost the same as the train. |
