| Post subject: a new word, meaning? |
Education + Entertainment = Edutainment
According to my source, it is invented by Americans.
In my old-style thinking, either Education or Entertainment could hardly co-exist with each other and still generating qualified students or learners.
So, how does "EDUTAINMENT" come into being? Any example?
Thanks

Thanks for informing me regarding this new word. But i remember that the word School comes from the ancient Greek skhole, which meant 'leisure'. Leisure is defined "time available for ease and relaxation" or spare time etc. Somehow education and pleasure doesn't sound related to some. But in old times, it is simply the same.
I might be wrong with this but it is just my tought.
Anyway, here is the official meaning of Edutainment from dictionary.
1. The act of learning through a medium that both educates and entertains.
2. Any of various media, such as computer software, that educate and entertain.

Never heard of that one before. So many languages over there it might be a blend of several. Don't think it came from America. |

I think "The Discovery Channel" is a good example. I can watch nature shows all day long. I've definitely seen Discovery Channel shows on Television in China. There's a shanghai channel called 实纪 "Shi Ji" which shows them sometimes, I think. |

Please let me re-explain my question this way, and I think jenming gets what I meant.
By definition, its meaning might be just the mix of the two, with supportive newly high-tech approaches.
So is there any good example of successful EDUTAINMENT? |

jenming, i am sure you are referring to Documentary Channel, the first channel of this type launched in CHina, well, they claimed them being the first one. And CCTV-10 is actually positioned and named as Science & Education Channel. Even locally, Shanghai has its own Education Channel with the logo of a piece of green leaf.
But, generally, different Discovery programs, those edcation channels just play the record of classroom teaching along with tons of ugly commercials.
They got education, how about entertainment? So still I think they are not quite qualified fot EDUTAINERS.
As to the Documentary Channel, which in my eyes is much more entertaining. Hope I can get much education by watching it.
And by the way, in chinese, I think it is Ji Shi, 纪实 one of my fav channels!!
While their problems, I think the biggest is still running short of cash sometimes. Things are better now for I used to watch the same program purchased from Discovery Channel or other countries on show time and time again, even four months after its last broadcast. These days, the repeated programs seem fewer than before.
BUT is it the character or standard of such documentary channel to operate regardless of times?
Another question now |

Hey, Smurfette: The term "edutainment" has been around for a number of years (could be close to 10), and I do think it originated in the U.S. I first encountered it when I was in the computer hardware/software business. There was a class of software titles, usually geared toward children and young adults, known as "edutainment software." Typically, these titles were educational in that they taught subjects such as geography ("Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?") or spelling, or math... but the learning process was made part of a game, such that getting to a correct answer advanced the gameplay, and animated graphics, music and game strategies were employed to help keep the user interested in the learning material.
It would be like having a game where you fly a spaceship around to visit the planets of our solar system, using the ship's instruments to take readings and therefore learn the composition, size, orbit, etc. of each planet. The software could be made to be much like a game, with even fictional elements (aliens, etc.), while still teaching factual information about the planets.
For that matter, I'm a big fan of Microsoft Flight Simulator. I'd say that MS Flight Sim qualifies as "edutainment" in that the flight controls, model, instrumentation, etc. is so realistic, that one can actually learn the principles of flight and the controls of various aircraft while also having fun. |
