Just had dinner with some Singaporean friends from another city. For snow and a more exotic expereince, I would suggest Harbin for a weekend retreat in winter.

There are alot of places one can go in China for different experiences.

Hi, I am Cat, a Singaporean who is posted by a local company to HK for two months come next week. However, I would be based in Shanghai eventually.

Having heard differing views about working in China, I really have mixed feelings about working in China. It would be great to get to know some Singaporean Expats prior to going.

Incidentally, I would appreciate if someone can advise whether it is better to apply for a working visa in Singapore or in HK. I was told that medical is not required for stay of less than 6 months. Is this true?

Hi, surprise really surprise so many singaporeans here. the recent visit to SGH confirmed that we are really moving out of SG to settle outside.
I am coming to shanghai till 2008. any singaporeans family willing to take in someone who needs to find a cheap place to stay near university?
situation: studying in fudan university till 2008. hostel rates in school = USD6 per day for double room, as i am coming without saving and financial support, i am making a risk in gambling for a dream i want, to get a degree in museum management in shanghai.
not equipped with much skills: can take photographs, can build a planted aquarium.
if someone can provide me with a place to stay at a really cheaper rate and it's near my university, i will be really glad.
arriving first week of september, hope to hear from u guys soon, or i have to pay my hostel rates till end of jan.
thanks Smile
if there's none, i am glad to meet up with u people, so long as its withn my budget.

miel.

Hi shanghaiERA,

glad to know that we could have someone whom we're familiar (ERA) with in SHA.. just curious : r u a Singaporean or Shanghainese (did I spelled correctly Embarassed ) or others??? coz if you're a Singaporean, maybe you 'll be able to understand our needs better when it comes to house hunting ..

i've emailed some of my queries to you, look forward for your reply.

Cheers! Razz

Hi ShanghaiERA. is your message considered as "advertisement"?
I'm asking this because when I reply to you to tell you I have an apartment in shanghai for rent, the moderators deleted it, and then pm me not to post advertisement message in other forums except the advertisement forum.

Hello Everyone,

Here's another S'porean moving to Shanghai soon....except I will be moving from Hong Kong instead. At first I thought Hong Kong was quite bad in term of air, cleaniness etc but Shanghai seems to be worse. Even my 2 years old daughter said "dirty dirty place" the few times we were there.

I am not working and I wondered are there many out there who are like me? Can we form a playgroup for the moms? I have been in HK for 2 years and guess what? I have not even got a friend cos too busy taking care of my girl. She will be attending preschool soon and that will really free me up at least for a few hrs everyday.

Let's keep in touch!

I came here for a holiday in june, then decided to shift here. it's a whole new experience, and a very interesting culture if you walk around enough.

the food may not suit your taste, i personally find local food too oily, salty, few varieties, but never heard of anyone getting food poisoning yet, so i guess it's ok. only thing is tap water cannot be drank.

the rest is said by the rest, rude behaviour by nice people etc etc. but i assure you, it's not gonna be as bad as putting a polar bear in africa, humans are made to adapt Wink

oh, update me on regular singaporean meetings leh. friend friend lah.

Hi,
Had tried some of the dishes at Malaya, here is my personal comments about the food.
1. Fishball Noodle soup - fishballs are the same as Singapore style but not the yellow noodle.
2. Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang - ok but not spicy enough.
3. Satay - not the same as Singapore, taste still ok can try
4. Pork with Black Vinegar - quite the same as what u get from some coffeeshop stalls in Singapore.
5. Fish Head Noodle Soup - good, the same type of thick beehoon we get in Singapore.
6. Prawn Noodle Soup - not nice. Prawns not fresh & yellow noodles is not nice.
7. Lamb Murtabak - good, quite tasty
8. Plain Prata - nice, the crispy type
9. Laksa - ok lah, can pass but don't have too high expectation.

ps: Malaya has home delivery to some districts can call them to check. Tel:53015989.

Enjoy your makan in Malaya this weekend.

Post subject: Back in Shanghai [again]

Hello there, here's another Singaporean potential tai-tai-to-be or perhaps wannabe making a comeback in Shanghai in 2 weeks time. Had my fair share of thoughts why Singaporean men are heading this way but just not figuring out [yet]. I think the wives are much braver in this dept, tendering resignation, arriving in a completely foreign city and making appropriate adjustment.

I'm not completely new to Shanghai as I was there from October'03 - January'04 and yes the winter was so unbearable! The air-con/heating unit in the apartment was practically useless [any tips?] so I have to do some extra homework this coming winter.

Well, basically, hello [again] to everyone here and around, lets get to know one another and get a house on fire in this city! Or those who are also new in Shanghai, we can go around and reckee places Wink How? How? How? Heehee Very Happy

Oh before I end [ok I admit being lor sor sometimes], any Frisbee or XiaoLongBao lovers here?

Hi, I am going to work in Shanghai, Pudong in Nov alone. Before I fly off, I hope that there is a checklist for me. Can I assume the following should be sufficient?

- inform Inland Revenue of Singaporeo of my move?
-inform all my banks and insurance agents of my change in address?
- inform the Singapore Consulant-General in Shanghai of my presence?
- the co in Shanghai said it will take care of my visa and immigration application. can I assume that nothing should be done on my side?

is there any other major things I should prepare in Singapore first?

Thanks you very much for any advices that you can provide me.

Hi Geo,

Do we have to inform Inland Revenue??? I didn't know about this.. About banks in S'pore, not all banks allow the change of address to foreign country, but you could opt for e-statement (send via email, which is more convenient). Not sure whether the postman in Shanghai can read 'english' address (hanyu pinyin)...

What I know about after you arrive in Shanghai, you need to have a medical check-up to apply for visa and also to 'report' to local police station within 24 hours of arrival... Hope someone who knows more about this can help you on this issue .. I'm still in S'pore and will be going over in Jan.

Cheers!
