Post subject: Is there such a thing as a moderate air ticket from Shanghai

I am moving to Shanghai in September and was reading about how crowded the city gets for the national holiday in early October. So I pop onto the net and look for fares to go visit my friends in Tokyo for the week. And there are no tickets less than US$1000. I think, must be a holiday so that's why the tix are so expensive. But somehow, the flights are still at least $900 even if I look for a non-holiday period.

Any suggestions on where to look for cheap flights from Shanghai? Or am I just being a newbie and not realizing that all air travel from PVG is going to cost a lot because it is serving expats and businesspeople primarily?

Thanks...

i think tickets to tokyo are expensive in general. i went for the may holiday and it was close to the price you saw...yes, it's also because it's a holiday time. talk to some local travel agents they should be able to get you some good deals, especially during non-peak travel time. i heard one agent quote tickets to tokyo for 3200rmb back in march so i know it's possible to get some reasonable prices.

One suggestion is not to buy tickets online. I've priced them online many times and they are always much more expensive to buy online than at an agent's office. It is even sometimes cheaper to buy directly from the airline's ticket counter than online. Not sure why it is more expensive to buy online than at an agents office. Suggest that you find a local agent in Shanghai and get a price from them.

I have never paid more than 5000 Rmb of any reagional flights... chinese travel agents seem to do it pretty well.

Last weeks itirenary ... Shanghai - Singapore - Jakarta - Singapore - KL - Singapore - Shanghai on Singapore airlines 4700 Rmb

Also flights to Europe are reasonable. Flying Finland next week with less than 7000 Rmb
