In Brazil we have more pizzas places than Italy, and you can find all types: tick crust, thin crust, crust with cheese inside the border...
The best tastes are the wood fired type, but still gas oven has more heat, higher heat, than sometimes the pizza is better.
And thin crust doens't mean oily crust...
I don't like Pizza Hut (is not pizza fot me) and Papa Johns is mama-huhu.
And is difficult to find a place who uses real cheese and a good pepperoni in it, so I still prefer
homemade pizza... |

I think Pizza Italia is pretty good.
I just used one of these coupons and got 20rmb discount from their pizza...
(http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/index.php?name=coupons&page=viewbus&bus= 22)
I like it. Has anyone tried Pasti's pizza? Is it good?
I like them too...

I tried Pasti... only because I dined in alone, it didnt mean I couldnt get the bread stick for first serve, no?? I saw they gave to another couple....sigh... I love bread sticks...
Chef who prepared my veg lasagna forgot the vegie, I would find three slices of cucumber, 2 slices of carrot, one or two shitake mushroom and that's about it. Cheesy... but I didnt order veg lasagna for no reason... I should have got macaroni en cheese instead.
I wont be dying to go back... I was tring to find that suriname rest without any luck and that nite I ended up in Pasti was my second try.
Sorry I am hijacking the thread |

Being from Brooklyn, I had no choice but to become an expert on NY pizza. As far as (other) pizza in the US goes, I've also lived in Jersey (good/bad/ugly), Ohio (don't even bother), Southern California (pathetic), Philly (pretty damn close). Over several months in Beijing, Pizza Hut was as close as I could get (though Peter Pan was OK), but all that satisfied was the ocassional need for something filling, greasy, and remotely like home.
I moved to Shanghai a few weeks ago and followed a web tip to a place called NYSP - New York Style Pizza. It's on/off Nanjing Xi Lu, in a submerged plaza by entry # 5 of the Jing An subway stop, and the pizza was far better than most of what I listed above, and very close to NY. They got the crust and sauce right, have a about a dozen standard versions, each Y88 (don't be ashamed to order "The Porko") AND they deliver.
3214 0024. I'd be curious what anyone thinks of this place - maybe I've just been in China too long......now find me a really good bagel. |

NYSP is greasy, thin and cheesy. Which means its good. I didnt think the pepperoni tasted all that special though(ie no taste). |

nettyli, I agree. I've been to California Pizza Kitchen several times now, and everytime the pizza has been good. I took my 12 year-old there this past weekend and she said it's the best pizza she's had in China so far.
Of course, we've only tried Papa John's (not bad) and Pizza Hut (just so-so). But quite honestly, desperate times call for desperate measures!
Best thing about CPK, besides the pizza, the desserts! |

aside from the name, I dont find any similarities between "new york style pizza" to a genuine new york style pizza.
the crust is too thick (and devoid of all flavor), the cheese is dull and rubberlike, the sauce is... completely tasteless. zero zing. uninspiring.
its a far cry from john's, its not even close to patsy's or lombardi's...its doesnt even measure up to any of the crap ray's and famiglia's pizza joints scattered around the city which are sub-par by nyc standards.
that being said, its cheap and it does the job of filling you up but if youre going to rave about it i have to agree youve:

im amazed (and suspicious- thanks for the address and phone number)...youre from brooklyn and claim to be a pizza expert.
NYSP is to your hood's excellent grimaldi's as... simply thai is to thai food.
jimix: although i havent visited in over a year, i had some tasty pizza last time. |

Peppes pizza just opened by my house got to try it out, but from the outside I feel it is kind of like another pizza hut style place but will definitely give it a try.
For thin crust pizza, definitely Jimix Seves is the best. For weeknight-I'm-too-lazy-to-cook-and-need-something-easy-pizza, I order from NYSP, it's a good large pizza that works for me!
Adj- I agree with Bleucheese, you've been in China too long (as have many of us) and after a while it's all on a relative scale |

Dragging this old thread up after a while, but i have too.I have just had the worst pizza EVER.
Nuovo Vita. WTF is this joint. Seriously, the pizza tasted like cardboard. It is the only piece of pie i have had in this town that is inedible. YES, i even managed to eat that rubbish they send out of Papa Johns. sorry, but this was nasty.
Best to eat the Sherpas book instead of ordering this rubbish.
That said, the pasta was pretty good for the price. Will order that again |

Papa Johns is nasty enough. If the crap you had is worse, OMG, that's gross! |

This thing was the nastiest piece of work i've had. The dough is like the first 3 pages of the Shanghai Daily, full of **** rubbish. As Andreas said, if it's worse than Papa Johns, it's nasty. |

I think I had the worst pizza in shanghai.. it was a while back at Tima on zhenning. First of all, it was underdone.. so the crust was soggy to the point of almost uncooked. Then they these huge pieces of raw onion, which I take were suppose to be cooked. But the thing that made me gag was the sauce... they thought any old tomato sauce would do.. so they used ketchup. Top it off with some kind of barely melted fake cheese.. I did not even get through 2 bites. Maybe they got it together over the year.. but I have not been back to try.
Sounds like a freshness issue on the crust.. letting the dough sit in the cooler for awhile too long. My experience at nuova vita was generally ok. I would order their lasagna again and again. |

It's a pity how some places start out pretty well, and then deteriorate rapidly. We have this Pizza Italia in Thumb Plaza in Pudong. When they started out best place I had seen for a while. Soon I couldn't be bothered anymore, now I don't even know if they are still around. |

Went there in August, the waiters tried to insist we sit upstairs where it was 487* F. We declined, had lasagna and osso bucco downstairs. The lasagna was okay, the osso busso was also edible but was like no osso bucco I've ever had before. Seemed that they used SnappySammy's gravy on some veal, very heavy on the tomato sauce. Tasted like Chef Boyardee with extra spices. Meat was decent quality tho.
Will try some other places before we get around to going there again. Didn't feel unhappy with the place but there are better eateries out there ... |

The best pizza in Shanghai can't be New York Style or American... with so many nice Italian options here like Cassanova, Pasti and even The Kitchen why fuss over Papa John's and Pizza Hut! This world is crazy. |

Pizza at Pane e Vino was great - nice crust, good toppings and great value. I also like the Kitchen but find them a tad pricey ( in general, not just the Pizza ) Cucina at Jin Mao has a decent Pizza too. But Pane e Vino is my fav |
