Post subject: Underground prices - single faires vs weekly tieckts?

Hi,

Is the underground there similiar to London tubes, in the sense that you can buy unlimited access to Zones 1-2, 1-6, etc (lines 1-2, 1-6) etc..
instead of buting individual faires each trip?

So, is it cheaper to buy a weekly or monthly undergound pass that gives you access to certain lines all week, month?

* Where I will be working:
--------------------------------
School 1 is close to Zhong Shan Park, on Wu Yi Road. School 2 (now our HQ) is close to Ren Min Square (People's Square), just off of the Nanjing Pedestrian Shopping Street.

Arriving 5th August, Thanx.

No, its not like London. There is no pass for a particular period, just a card which you top-up, much like a pre-paid mobile phone card, for convenience only. You would not want to be queueing up with the teeming masses every day to buy one journey ticket. The cost is also incomparable with London. The absolute maximum fare is, I think 5 kuai (30p), but I should say about 75% of possible journeys cost 2 or 3 kuai. Shouldn't break the bank.

You can purchase individual ticket, pre-paid RMB 50 cards or Shanghai transportation cards, which are good for use on the Metro, taxis, buses and ferries. Time does not come into play. The amount paid for the fare is not changed if you purchase individual tickets or a pre-paid card (rechhargeable). The cards are easisest because you can use them most places. Cost of purchasing a card is RMB30 (one time fee per card). Can be bought in any Metro station. No charge to refill balance.

Pre-paid cards sound good.

What is a Shanghai transportation card, and why would I get that indtead of the prepaid cards?

To top up a pre-paid card, do you hae to wait in a line? or can yo do it at a mchine electronically which accepts notes?

thanx.

Can' top it off at a machine (that I know about). But I have never waited in a line to do so . . . and even if you do, the lines aren't that bad (trust me . . . wait until you see bank lines).

The only differences are that the pre-paid cards are only in RMB50 demonitions and only good in the metro. they are also made of a coated paper. They are not rechargeable, which means you will be in line more often. Additionally, if you only have RMB1 remaining and want to use it, you will have to pay at the other end (causing a wait because you are exiting).

The Shanghai Transportation Card is rechargeable, similar to a cc in feel (hard plastic), can be used in all public transportation (especially helpful because oftentimes, taxi drivers cannot exchange RMB100 notes easily) and they will also permit you to run a negative balance in the Metro (if you only have RMB1 remaining on your card, then you can still use the Metro and exit . . . the negative balance will be retained and the next time you recharge the balance owed will be deducted . . . so if you took and RMB3 metro ride, only had RMB on the card, then added RMB100 to the card, your balance would be RMB98).

STC is a much better way to go . . .more flexible and doesn't get crushed.

Thanx - Shanghai transportation card sounds best then for long term stay.
Since it can be used for underground and taxi..
This must mean the taxis have a device for reading these Shanghai transportation cards...
mmmm.... probably a smart card of sorts...

The Shanghai transit card can also be topped off at many convenience stores, allowing you to avoid the Metro station madness altogether.
